My 1198 gets to 110c in traffic all the time, and as soon as i move it comes down. On the motorway it stays around 85c ish. Oddly, it never goes above 110c, which led me to believe there was a problem. I got the fairing off, and was amazed where the rad cap is. Found the plastic reservoir between the v shape of the engine, and it had nothing in it. Filled this, and straight away it pissed all over my feet from the overflow hose. Had a google and it seems this is an overflow tank, so that was normal. Do i have a problem? Not the most mechanically minded.... Thanks.
Hmm. Page 84 of the manual says to fill the expansion reservoir if below the min level, which mine was. Any ideas why it ran straight out when i filled it?
I know nothing about the 1198 but on my 748 the expansion tank is around the headstock, the tank in the v of the engine is the overflow tank Steve
Was out on mine yesterday evening, once over 50mph avg temp 85-90c once you start slowing down temp goes upto 103-107 but holds steady at around that temp, oh mines the 1199 but all my other Ducs have been the same give or take a degree.
Really depends on the ambient temperature of the day, early summer 15-18c, runs at around 66-68c, mid summer 20c onwards, low 70s running but rockets to 105c when sat in traffic then fans cool to the 90s and the whole process then repeats itself. Interestingly, this is the same for both the 848 and the 1098. Both have had coolant changed recently.
My fans turn off as soon as it hits 100 c on temp gauge. so in constant traffic it never runs below 100c
I left at 6am today, not much traffic until I hit Marble Arch area. Only got to 107 today, and only briefly. Temperature on the whole seemed to be lower, even while moving was around only 65c. Just found it quite odd previously that while siting in traffic it rises and rises, gets to 110c then doesn't go anymore. Thought this was a fault. Thanks all, anyway, my mind is at rest now
when i first got my bike the fan would kick in at about 103 / 105 degrees. i had this changed this so they kicked in at 98. i find it better when stuck in traffic.
Riding home, I only got to 102c. I did read about purging the system to release any trapped air in it, I wonder if I may have done some of that last night with my tinkering, hence the lower running temperature now?
My 999 stays around 70 when riding at any speed. Slow down and the temp goes up. First fan cuts in at about 101 and second at about 103 if the first didn't stabilise it. Ducati obviously regard anything up to 100 as normal operating temp or the fans would cut in earlier. The combination of pressure and coolant should raise the boiling point to something like 127 or 128 degrees C
mine is the same 1198s 65-75 when on open road, and jumps up to 106 when sat in traffic. you could try and change/flush your coolant to see if it helps bring it down a few degrees or fit a samco hose kit. But i think its normal
Hi last year I had no end of problems with my 1198 overheating, the fans should cut in at 104 deg and cut out at 99deg so i'm told by Duc, I found that my wiring had a break in from the ECU which then intermittently stopped the fans working, once the wiring had been sorted I then changed the coolant changed the relay(cheapest thing I ever bought from Ducati) that feeds the fans that cured the problem.
Re: 'odd' I am guessing that your fan(s) is/are cutting in? Although it might seem painful ( and you only have to do it once every so often) it's always good as a matter of course to let an engine tick over until the fan cuts in just to make sure everything is working properly.
My 1198 runs around 85c but in traffic soon hits 100, I think the fan cuts in around 104 and stops around 99 as mentioned above. Plastic pot between the v is the expansion tank and this should be between min and max when cold. You could check the radiator by removing the cap but I think the right hand air scoop needs to be removed to get access. ONLY check this when engine is stone cold as it's not clever getting covered with boiling water. The level should be just visible in the neck of the radiator
My 1198 also runs around 85 and jumps up in traffic. Connect the hose back up it should be fine also there should be coolant in that tank
When refilling coolant do I just pour it into the expansion tank only? I'm hoping so as the design of the lid on the rad is quite unusual in its placement.
Make sure the radiators full which I'm sure it will be then just fill up the expansion bottle. Is your gearbox a bit chunky mine is. I had a 996 and it was super smooth and not as much travel on the gear lever
