Noisy Front Brake... [hm 821sp]

Discussion in 'Hypermotard' started by pisquano, May 11, 2015.

  1. hi guys
my Hyper 821 sp is soon due a first service (420 miles so far), but I noticed the front brake makes like a "train brake" noise when I hit it hard... it's not a high pitched noise, more like low one, quite noticeable.
not so when I brake soft or progressively.
brake efficiency doesn't seem to be affected at all.
is this normal? I read threads where people said Ducati dealers sometimes told them it was normal.
could it be my front disc is warped somehow, or some junk got into the pad?

    any ideas?
    thanks

  2. You can get noise from semi metallic pads it is normal , sometimes you can hear like a scraping sort of sound when you just push the bike up the drive .
It's not done much miles , assume it stands about a bit , go on the road with it and get up to 70 mph and do a long steady progressive braking till nearly stopped but don't stop , do this 3 times .
This will clear the top surface off the pads and break through any glazing and hardened cementite material .

  3. I know the scraping sound, I used to have it on my Monster when I pushed it. but on my Hypermotard it's not that, it's only when I brake hard and it's not the same type of noise. I guess I want to just understand if it's only pads that need to break-in, or there's something wrong with the brake disc

  4. Unlikely to be the disc unless it's shuddering on braking. Could be that the pad is sticking to the calliper which can make them squeal which can be solved with the appropriate lube in the appropriate place - don't think copper slip is recommended these days but something similar in the back of the pad may help.

  5. I know what you mean , it will be a high pitched squeal , just try the brake clean up procedure I said first , very often it can just be surface glaze .
What brass flute said about copper slip is correct , Every man and his dog used it on the back of pads ..... don't , it does not work , plus you should use non metallic based brake greases
In fact where you have metal and aluminium together don't use copper slip it causes a galvanic corrosion , copper slip is ok where you have metal to metal contact , metal and aluminium mix use specific non metallic greases
