What oil filter do you use for your 848 evo? I'm considering using a Mahle OC5, for 2 reasons 1.@ Mr R on here rates the Mahle filters, and he knows what he is talking about. 2. I can get on ebay for 1/2 the price as in a Ducati dealers. I would appreciate any feedback. I know that some peeps like to use the K&N because of the nut spot welded to the bottom of the filter, but I'm just as happy not to have a spot welded nut that could tear off, and I never have any problems using the tool that fits over the filters flutes. This is the first oil change on this bike and I have to remove the mesh filter from the bottom of the crankcase, I have already been made aware of the made of cheese 4 nuts, is there a gasket between the mating surfaces or is something like 3 bond needed?
Don't buy off ebay, Opie Oils are currently doing them at £3.74 or 2 for £7.30. Never used them so sorry can't offer feed back. Andy PS - oh yes, mrp is £4.40
for the pre filter, just some high temp sealant will do. just keep the bead thin and follow the shape of the plate, (you'll see what i mean when the plate is off). 2 new O rings for the filter. lightly tap the OEM bolts before trying to undo them. i replaced mine with st/st cap head bolts. ian
Ian Thanks for the advice, only thing I don't understand is you mention '2' new o rings for the filter. Is this the pre filter? I'm trying to get organized so as I have everything ready for the oil and filter change. I would also appreciate if you could let me know the size of the replacement cap head bolts please.
Hi john, yes the pre filter I got them both from the dealers but they had to order one of them in. There is a chance that the top O ring might stay in there so just be on the look out. And a decent pair of long nose pliers to pull it out. Then you should be good to go. When you've done the oil change, just keep your eye on the cover to check for oil.
I can't remember the size of the 4 bolts, John. IIRC M6 X 16mm. I used medium strength locktite as well.
OE Ducati one is cheap enough an easily available. Don't forget the crush washer for the sump plug and mesh filter. While you are at P&H, get a few of them as they can sometimes slip during tightening and mangle themselves into a mess of crushed washer that doesn't seal very well! Is the 848 a deep sump like 749R? If so, there is a little gasket beneath the filter cover (the one adjacent to the sump bolt). Also, while at P&H, you may as well get an oil filter!
Thanks R I need to rtfm, been so focused on the rear end I haven't even looked at the sump! Re: mangling washers. I use a dab of grease to hold the washer in place whilst tightening.
Top tip courtesy of John Baines - smear some grease on the head of the mesh filter to hold the washer in place whilst you are doing up the filter.
