OK, I'm sure this is a stupid question.... the rivets / nuts in the middle of the left and right fairings.. Are these "Well Nuts"? Mine don't seem to have a hex inner, not sure how I get them out? Is it just a tiny allen key? (I want to split the fairings so I can clean them up and respray them)
If yours is a screw going into a nut encased in a black rubber blob, yes, that is a well nut and the same as my 748. Andy
Yeah there's a rubber blob at the back, it just looks like a rivet at the front tho (doesn't look like it's a hex in the centre, but then I haven't got a tiny allen key to try and unscrew it!) I'll borrow some tiny allen keys off someone and give it a go... Are there any reputable hex nuts that people use if I were to replace them? Are they all the same diameter? I see on e-bay lots advertised, I can guess they come in various qualities
They aren't Allen heads they are a star type ( not sure of right name) should be a key in tool kit And a something like 3.5 mm in size
If you look in your OE tool pouch the small right angle key isn't an allen key, it is a small torx which is what the OE screen and 2 piece fairing fixings are. Andy
I haven't got the OE tool pouch! Just tried my Torx sockets, the smallest I've got is T10 and that doesn't seem to fit! Is it a smaller Torx than that then? Bugger! Might need to buy another Torx set then? If anyone knows what Torx number it is, could you let me know ta
thanks chaps, I found a small set of Torx screwdrivers on the bay so I'll get them, cheers! I could drill them out, but then I need to put new ones in so will need the screwdriver! Any recomendations for replacement well nuts? Are they much of a muchness or are the ebay ones a bit cheap?
You do not want to replace them with anything other than stainless steel or titanium, pretty anodised aluminium ones are softer than Stilton and the tool socket rounds out. Speedy Fasteners are a good source and have been recommended on here before. You also might find a Torx screwdriver is not man enough, Sealy do a good relatively inexpensive 23 piece set AK6190. Andy
I use Pro-bolt replacements which come as a set with the correct allen key. They are alloy but because they use an Allen head they come apart much more easily, if you coat each one with a bit of coppaslip you should not have a problem. They also come with the correct wellnuts. Some kits particularly the cheap eBay ones just have cheap nuts on the back and also despite being "plated" they go rusty or discolour
You can get these from the traditional format of shop too.... Man behind a sales counter who goes into the back and returns with a high quality item in the correct size... Choice of bolt head types.... Just a thought! This kind of place: Swift Fasteners Ltd
Looks a cool place for all things fasteners! On-line is just a lot easier cause I work M-F etc... Def worth me checking out tho if I have hassle and can get over there cause they're not far from me. Thanks.
