Brake Rotor Bolts

  1. A probably commonly asked question but...

Front brake rotor bolts, what can I replace them with?

    They're M8 x 16 and the ones I've removed are magnetic.

Lots of forums are saying SS is dangerous and to go for Ti, but I cannot really bring myself to spend £80 on 12 bolts.

Westfield fasteners do some 12.8 Bright Zinc Plated jobbies
Bright Zinc Plated (BZP) 12.9 High Tensile Steel M8 Socket Head Cap / Allen Screws (DIN 912)
which on paper look fit for purpose but I was just wondering what the general consensus on here was? These are not stainless so I guess rusting would be an issue.

    What are your thoughts guys?

    Cheers

  2. Question would be why do you need to change them?

  3. Good question.

I'm rebuilding the bike and have pretty much replaced/replaced all the bolts and the rotor bolts look pretty grotty. Also, I lost one :(

I've just had the wheels newly painted and the bolts just look awful next to immaculate wheels and rotors.

  4. I'm not totally sure but I believe the rotor bolts are specific for the job and the heads are designed so as not to fowl. When I fitted 6mm race discs to my track bike I used drilled titanium from ........ shit, can't remember but probably ProBolt. Deffo not a cosmetic thing but right for the job. Andy

  5. I have used SS cap head Allen bolts on my discs for years. Road and track. Never had any problems whatsoever.

  6. As above,Ive never had probs with stainless.

  7. Get them replated, Redditch Electroplating can replate to original specification by zinc plating and then passivating them.

    Redditch Electro-Plating - Established 1893

I know a couple of people that have used them on my recommendation when undertaking full bike rebuilds and they have all been pleased with the quality of finish and the price, I use them regularly for my full rebuild work. They replate by the bucket load so it is worth sending a decent number of bolts or fixings off at one time. Cost is about £30 - £50 depending on what you want done.

A complete bike (rebuild) usually comes in at about £50 for all the bolts and fixings. Speak to Mark Harris directly if you have any questions, he will gladly answer them and advise.

This is a family run business and their personal service is excellent.

  8. Not sure that is the case for 15mm R spec offset. I would just advise caution. Andy
