If the universe is infinite, then anything that you can imagine, however bizarre, has not only happened, but happened an infinite number of times.
The "problem" with infinity is that you could cut the rope in half and it would still be infinitely long...
You misquote. Everything will happen, as well as not happen, given infinite time. Therefore if we are indeed in an infinite universe with infinite time, some of those things may not have happened yet.
In what has this infinitely long hole been dug ? Note that it can't be in an infinite ground because that would leave no space for the (infinite) sky. And what happens if you just chuck the whole, infinite rope down the hole at once ? And anyway, how do you find the entrance to the infinitely long hole ? Or the end of the infinitely long rope, to start lowering. Infinity is a concept, not a reality. Haven't fully worked out what reality is yet though.
It wasn't a long hole, it was deep - on what orientation was this task set I wonder (no I don't)
Until you've got enough rope to hang yourself with of course.. The rope will have a weight to it and long before it reaches the weight where it might break under its own weight, you wouldn't be able to hold it anymore anyway, so it would become self feeding. Is the rope supposed to be tangle proof? Is the gravity pulling it supposed to be infinite too? This question has more questions than answers...
