I have recently picked up a 749 for a steal and I have been going through it with a fine toothed comb. It needs belts and a service which I can do at home but I have found one more problem. The rebound adjuster on the right side fork is jammed in. Any advice? Do I need any special tools before I start stripping it? Many thanks.
To be fair, the forks would probably benefit from a full professional service and they will rectify that at the same time. You should budget about £120 but it is money well spent. Andy
I do all my own servicing to keep costs down as this can be a bloody expensive hobby. I also know that if I do the work it will be done properly. Too many times now over the years have I been to a garage and the car or bike comes home with a new fault. Does anyone know or am I the first to take this job on?
You'll need to dismantle the fork to get the cap with the adjuster off. You might as well do both of them and change the oil while you are at it. You'll find the procedure on how to do it here. The only special tools you'll need is something to fit into the two holes in the sleeve over the spring to pull the spring down so that you can slip a washer with a slot cut in it under the locknut at bottom of the fork cap to keep it compressed while you loosen nut. Remember to loosen the fork caps while the legs are still in the yokes but with the top yoke clamps loosened. On reassembly, the recommended oil is Shell Donax TA 7.5 sae filled to 104mm from the top of the leg with the springs out.
Brill, I already have a spring tool. So to dismantle is much the same as any other USD fork. Thanks for the info.
I didn't notice mention of fully backing off any adjusters before stripping the forks; so apart from the OP not being able to move one of them, the other/s should be backed off otherwise they can be easily damaged.
