  7. Interesting thread.

I think I once harboured an idea of being a diplomat. Just as well I gave up on that one. I'm not especially diplomatic.

When it came to the crunch, I decided on marketing. A good synthesis between telling stories and making sense of numbers. I like both (but prefer stories). Then I wanted to be in advertising, where you could do more stories and less numbers.

But I worked out it was better to be calling the shots and saying "jump" (marketing) than dodging them and saying "how high?" (advertising).
I'm still in marketing now. Can be good fun (when it's not corporate bollox, which mainly it is) but if only it paid like banking...

The other downside of marketing and advertising is that all the people who don't do it think they're experts.

Having said that, if marketeers built aeroplanes, would I fly in them?

  8. musician, respected by many...guitar teacher, despised by everybody.

  9. I don't despise you! Come and teach me!

And what about Marty Schwartz? He is loved by millions (including me).

  10. When I was a kid I wanted to be a professional athlete. Sport is big here in Aus and I played a lot and was pretty handy at a few. If that didn't work out I was going ok at school so figured I'd do some sort of engineering at Uni. Circumstances changed all that and I ended up joining the Aus Army at 16 as an electronics apprentice before moving into IT a few years before I got out - I spent 7 years in green. Moved through the helpdesk into projects via various support then architecture roles and now I'm an IT project manager.

I still don't know what I want to do when I grow up though so I'm at Uni doing an MBA. I figure it will help me understand what it is I want to do and I imagine I'll become a small business owner within the next 5 years - following the Gilps route.

  11. Left college became a printer for a few years, then worked at K&N filters making bike filters, then a few years as a courier, a couple more maintaining trains, and now at Toyota building cars for the last 9 years. Now looking for my sword of shame to fall on...

  12. Wanted to join army after was kicked out of police school but erm fail. Now no idea what I want to do as plan B of being rich by 30 failed.

  14. Wanted to join the Police.

At 16 was told don't bother with the cadets, go away and do something else & come back in a few years.

Went away to Post Office Telecommunications ( pre BT, yes I'm old! )

Stuck that till I was nearly 24 but the writing was on the wall after BT was privatised so I applied & joined the Police.

Had a great time there, they even gave me fast cars, guns and flashbangs to play with and paid me too!!!!!

Good old cutbacks meant bye bye Rushjob, don't let the door slam on your way out.

Now do a bit of abnormal load escorting and am currently waiting for my taxi licence to arrive to do a bit of taxi & chauferrring when I'm not out having fun on the bike or shooting.

  17. I wanted to be a fine artist illustrator had the potential got in to my degree then ran away from home at 17 became a litho printer .
Worked in design and print for 12 years hated it.

Sold Eco products for a bit..
Then my art background got me a job out of the blue designing and making special needs resources for children with communication problems mainly ASD Aspergers and Autism.

Now do a bit of that and hands on with the children which I love.
I get to be a big kid .. Can be stressy .
    But I love it.

Only thing I hate is low pay and no jobs full time hours :( plus unpaid time off and set holidays :(
I'd like another challenge maybe more challenging children , maybe PRU children those who can't be included in school ..
Really would like a career again rather then a job.

  18. Allways wanted to be in the Army, didn't know whiich part until i had my interview and a Royal Engineer it was for me.

When i started i wanted to be a Corporal they where Gods, but that came and went and i ended up being a Warrent Officer for the last 5 years i was in, would i change it? would i F**K, but i would try harder when i was younger, too busy having fun!

  19. Wanted to be a fast jet pilot in RAF. Not academic and tall enough so I went to uni, got a mickey mouse degree and now I work in TV. Which I hate. With a passion.

  20. I wanted to be in the Aircraft Industry as technician or similar, never got there but did work for Aviation Traders in Southend in inspection for a while, drifted around various jobs as a teen/20something, shop work, sheetmetalwork, scaffolder, then was offered government training course in Plumbing after a bike accident and a year off sick. My exwife suggested Plumbing and its one thing I can thank her for. Been self employed since '87 and still enjoy my work, mainly maintenence, small jobs a speciality, I work a few hours most days and earn enough to keep me fed and watered and run the bikes. Just hope the phone keeps ringing, there's a lot of competition out there now.
