Quick question and query about the 900ss

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by desa, Sep 18, 2012.

  1. Hi im new to the forum nice to meet you all im Ben,

Im currently looking at having my first secondhand ducati to build on, i want to create a cafe racer style similar to the
radical ducati guys from madrid but change a few things. Link below for similar style.

Radical Ducati S.L.: Café Veloce By Radical Ducati

My first option was a ducati monster 900 pre1999 purely because i want carbs and not injection, just a personal preferance.
but find it is hard to get hold of these for under £2000 and do tend to be quite pricey perhaps because there still high in demand and popular or because they hold there value well.

My next option was something similar to the GT1000, which is what the RAd ducati team used, but those badboys go for near 5k and i think they started building them in 2006 not too sure.

so ive come to my last option which im very keen on, is the 900ss since they go back to 1992 theres a good chance theres carb models. Thing is i could not find any info on them about which models are carburetor. (by models i mean which date they did them up to) so for example i know that on the monster they introduced injecton to the 2000 model hence why i would have gone for a 1995-1999 and plus they were aircooled.

so could anyone shine some light on which model years i need to look for and can anyone give me some guidance on the ss and reviews how they ride etc.

    Thanks guys much appreciated
    Ben

  2. 900 ss up to 1999 FE were carby:upyeah:

  3. thanks mate, that cleared up that confusion for me,
hmmm would a gt1000 fuel tank fit an ss frame they do seem to be pretty compatible looks to be the same frame to me.

  4. Desa, the early carby supersport is a great overall package 1992-1997 I think, handling is fantastic, go with a 900cc the 750cc and below just don't have the power. I've been out riding
with many good riders on various bikes R1, GSX, K1200 on the twisties, and you will hold your own, great fun to ride and give you great confidence as they are just such a planted and positive ride.

  5. Hey DrDuke, thanks for the positive reply on the 900ss :). Yes i agree, i was looking for something 900cc and above wouldnt dream of riding anything lower as it can become quite boring after a month hehe. The 900 monster and the SS both stole my heart but Ive come to a dessision to go for a 900ss.
Definetly want a carby tho, dont like all that fuel injection onboard computer s**t. just have to look out for a 1992-1997 version now.

Just a recap, Would you happen to know if the Frame on the 900ss is the same as th GT1000. because im on the look out for a GT fuel tank too. to fit an ss model frame.

    Thanks
    desa

  6. I'm not sure on the frame, but I'm sure someone on here will know.

  7. No they weren't

    I had a 98 900SSIE, last model year for carbs was 1997

  8. plus 1 - my i.e is a 98 model. If an FE is on a 99 plate it was hanging around unregistered for a while. Why not go injected? its a little quicker, and a far more tractable ride. Its a very simple injection system, and works well.

  9. Hi Ben, You can tell the carbys from the injected by the body shape, check out the shape of my bike, its an injected, the square headlighted SS with the slab sided fairing is the carby one, simples :upyeah:. Both lovely bikes in my opinion, would love to have one of each, luckily have mates with carbys so in some ways I do.
As for the GT tank, I have also harboured the idea of putting the GT tank on a SS frame. I know the frames are different but they must be close in dimension, certainly worth investigating. But looking on ebay those GT tanks are pricey.
    Good luck
