Thumb Brake Used For Clutch ?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Android853sp, Sep 17, 2015.

  1. So after 4 weeks of physio on my left hand middle finger flexor tendon, the therapist has "allowed" me up to 10 mintes on the bike at any one time :Bawling:. Ain't going to work so I have been trying to come up with an alternative. A thumb brake is an entirely different hand action which doesn't require the stretch and contraction which is giving the pain. Is there going to be enough movement at the clutch slave cylinder if I set up a thumb brake master cylinder instead of the usual clutch master cylinder ? Thanks, Andy

  2. I would imagine the feel on letting the clutch out would take a lot to get used to where the clutch bites

  3. Good point but I'm going stir crazy not being able to ride and clutching at straws for a solution until the hand gets better. Andy

  4. Shame Rekluse don't make their clutch kits for Ducati. Might be work seeing if anything they do make is compatible?

  5. Clutching at straws... Don't take the piss [emoji6]

You'd almost be better off going crazy and using a thumb brake for the rear brake, and then repurposing the rear brake pedal as a clutch. Your foot will be better at finding the bite point (works in a car anyway).

  6. so it's your left hand that's fooked, my mate has a knackered right arm/hand courtesy of a Taliban ied interface. He has to Velcro his hand onto the right bar grip but does throttle clutch and brake on his left grip.

  7. Yes, sorry about that, was not intended just very tired. Andy

  8. Scooter??

  9. Not come across this make and from a quick look at their web site, not obvious what makes it different. Can you expand ? Andy

  10. You can go off people very quickly :p. Andy

  11. Honda vfr 1200 with auto gearbox. Bit extreme money wise but hey ho !

  12. You thumb will have to be very strong. Think of the effort used by hand to operate the clutch lever.

You can try a different bore size to help with the ease of action but this would alter the stroke length of the clutch slave cyl by shortening it.

Take some springs out of the clutch pack to reduce pressure req'd on the lever.

  13. Rekluse clutches are used by a shed load of off road riders I might be wrong but it basically transforms your box into an automatic. Rekluse only appear to make them for off road bikes though. Another point would be would it work on a dry clutch?

  14. If it was a long term thing you could go pro shift auto blipper ala @kope999R

  15. Not sure you'd get one for a Multistrada. I sincerely hope it's not although I am still waiting to see a hand specialist. Physio is convinved I've split the tendon sheath so minor surgery might be needed. S'pose the timing is about as good as it could be as I only tend to do about 1000 miles between November and February. Andy

  16. If money isn't a problem you could get a deeper clutch basket made with an inch more depth. Then you can run about 6 extra friction and steels, gives you a shit load more clutch surface area. Which in turn means you can reduce your spring pressure by at least half. Thumb lever just won't work as you won't have enough strength or movement needed.

  17. Unless;

  19. Hi Mate, i have a seen guy in Ipswich with only a right arm! he has never had a left arm he has adapted his R1 and i believe now a Zx10 with a clutch fitted to the right bar vertical above the the bar brake and throttle in the same place, he uses his fourth finger for the clutch, and middle 2 for the brake palm for throttle, he his bloody quick on the bike as well i could not catch him, only in the bar!
