916 Rear Brake Problem

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Christy, Oct 4, 2015.

  1. I bought a 916 back in August however riding it back from the dealer the back brake seized on. I very rarely use the back brake, however i had done on that occasion so thought that it was just the brake dragging.
On the next ride it seized on again, but free'd off with some kicking and cooling down. I took the bike back to the dealer and he fitted a brand new caliper. on the next few rides there were no problems. however this morning it has happened again. When cooled down there is no issue. Under normal circumstances there is free play at the pedal and the wheel runs free. I keep my foot away from the pedal when riding, so i am at bit of a loss to know what to do next. The bike had just a month warranty so it looks like i will have to sort to myself now. The brake hose runs across the back of the engine so i wondered if it may be getting hot.

    Any ideas?

  2. Check the master cylinder, see if there is enough freeplay on the lever before it engages the plunger on the master cylinder.

  3. You need at least 5 mm play, it is a well known problem, I had a bit of dirt in the slave cylinder which prevented the plunger fully returning, I removed the slave and lightly clean the inside with fine wet and dry and all is well.

  4. Yes Ihave been there! Ruined my 748 rear disc by over adjusting the lever, the fluid gets really hot because the master cylinder is bolted to the engine so u need to leave much more free play that u would think, 5mm won't feel right but it is.

  5. Thank you Gents I will give that a try. Hopefully the rear disc is ok as it has been very hot.

  6. Yep, been there - on the way home from the first service, back brake gradually applying until I stopped at a roundabout and couldn't move - the pads were actually on fire and all the gold paint burnt off the rim of the disc.

Dealer fitted new pads and backed off the pedal (which they had previously adjusted!) and it was OK, however a year or so later it needed a new caliper due to a leak which, in hindsight was probably caused by the heat.

I doubt the disc is damaged but the caliper (or at least the seals) may be...

  7. Thanks. I will check the pads and seals also

  8. hi mate if you want i have a brand new rear caliper and a fully working master cylinder if your interested??

  9. Thanks. I will bear that in mind.

  10. Fitted a new master cylinder over the weekend and that seems to have cured the problem.
I checked the caliper and it was all OK I was surprised by how little room there is for new pads even when the pistons are pushed right in only a fag papers worth of clearance. Did a but 80 miles on Sunday and kept checking the clearance and brake function all was OK.
    Thanks for the help everyone.
