1098 1098r Steering Head Angle

  1. Was idly leafing through my workshop manual (after locating the regulator removal section) and noticed that there are no instructions on how to change the head angle.
Not that I am wanting to do it, but has an R got an adjustable head angle? It looks like it has the bolts on the outside of the headstock but it doesn't have the "castellations" like on my 916 that you can see just below the top yoke.
    Just wondering, like.

  2. Found this...
Yes, the 1098R has an adjustable steering head, but the OEM steering head insert isn't adjustable. It only has one position. You can use the 999R steering head insert to change the angle or if you're a real bad ass you can get the 999RS version which is magnesium.

  3. So...if it only has one position...it's not really "adjustable".
Where did you find that info, the link takes me to Eurocarparts!

  4. It is adjustable, but not in the simple way of the older bikes.
You'd have to remove it and reinsert it. Problem is, once in the 23.5 degree position, it doesn't have the hole for the retaining bolt, so you'd have to drill one :(

Better off getting an older insert (which will also give you another 5mm clearance if you're gonna go with lower offset yokes) - or better still, use a straight 24 degree insert (like Bayliss did apparently!).

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  5. Just googled - didn't put a link in, the Forum did it automatically for some reason!

  6. Wasn't looking to do it but was just wondering how/if it could be done. Thanks though.

These new fangled bikes are not as easy to work on as the older stuff...916SPS and 749R (in decreasing order of ease to adjust/access stuff)!
