OK, seems like I have been checking my oil all wrong for the past forever. I have always done it cold. Spotted on a few site that you should run engine for 30 sec then allow to cool for 2 mins then check. Just tried this (GSXR) and the oil level was lower than when cold. Is this right?
What the manual says :- Check engine oil level Engine oil level can be checked through the sight glass (1) located onto clutch cover. Oil level must be checked with the motorcycle perfectly upright and the engine cold. Oil level should be between the marks on the sight glass. If the level is low, top up with SHELL Advance 4T Ultra engine oil. Remove the oil filler cap (2) and top up until the oil reaches the required level. Refit the plug. Mr Haynes is havering
go with it. much difference between hot and cold? if not i would keep it at the lower of the two to try and eliminate previous oil in air box. if remains ok take up to the other.
If you ride a Haynes 750 then do what he says, but if you ride a Ducati then do what they say. As long as it is between the high and the low mark then it will make absolutely no difference to the engine. If the owner of the bike decides that he knows better than Ducati then be prepared to suffer the consequences.
Haynes Manuals.............A laugh a minute.................... ..........until you bugger something up.
Yes, it will be. Running the engine for those 30 seconds gets the oil pumped around the engine to moving parts that need lubricating, the volume of oil to do that is taken out of the volume in the sump where you are measuring the oil. Therefore the level will be lower if the oil needs longer than 2 minutes drain back down to the sump again from the heads, camshafts, valve gear etc down all the galleries in your GSXR engine
I've always done mine cold. The only exception is after a filter change where the bkie has been run to fill everyting back up (even though I partially fill the filter before installing it) Hot or cold, I can't see it making much difference.
