Hi all, I have hit an immobiliser issue which I think is maybe not that unusual. Here are the key facts: It's a used bike, I do not have the red key or the code card. 2003 M620ie Immobiliser has activated itself - ignition lights light up but starter does not turn. The dash had been showing odd behaviour pre-immobilisation - the speedo needle swept around randomly, the rev counter was not working. The rev counter suddenly came back to life on a re-start, then on killing the engine the immobiliser came on and it has not started since. Battery is strong, the key sensor is in the correct position and the fuses are all fine. I have contacted the excellent gentlemen in Holland (Biggelaar) who can virginise the ECU... but there's a question about whether my dash is perhaps the culprit, rather than the ECU. Please, does anyone have experience of a similar issue, or know of any way in which I can do some tests and identify where the issue actually lies? Cheers! Paul
Give the loom a good looking over for damage. In particular check the small earth fly lead that goes under one of the ECU bolts. Give the ring terminal a good clean and refit. Replace the relays with new. The coil/injector/pump relay causes no end of electrical gremlins and strange behaviour. Cheap part to replace and should be included in your yearly maintenance schedule to replace. Is the key antenna in good working order? These are a £25 part. Things start getting expensive when it is the ECU or dash. I can loan you a key antenna and an ECU to try before you commit to having the immo disabled in your own ECU. You would just need to pick up the P&P.
Chris - many thanks for that advice and very kind offer of the loan parts. I will start with a good clean up all round. Where are you based, by the way? I am in Surrey but travel a bit. Paul
Hi Chris, Thanks again for the very kind offer of spare parts to help with my diagnosis, and I apologise in taking so long to respond. The reason for the delay, is that the bike miraculously came back to life, and the gremlin whilst not completely going away, has changed a bit and has become inconsistent. One issue which I certainly have is that of a cable around the headstock being partially broken... or maybe it has an iffy connector.. either way there's something in that area that's causing an intermittent fault and I need to track that down and eliminate it before it's worth doing further analysis. By the way (and for the benefit of adding to the collective wisdom on this forum) the pure immobiliser issue (therefore nothing to do with oddly functioning clocks) seems to be battery health-related. Keeping the battery very fully charged (rather than just allowing my riding to charge it to what seemed like a full charge) seems to have eliminated all immobiliser-related problems. Good news there, then. Once I have my wiring continuity issue resolved, I'll be back...
