My 1198s has been a bit pedantic trying to start recently. It has Exact start cables on it aswell, and the tps was recently rest, which made a world of difference to the idle. Also it has been on a new Optimate for a week at a time. While ignition is on it shows battery as 12.3v, when i get it going it is 14v. Could it be as simple as needing a new battery, is 12.3v normal with the engine off? Bought new spark plugs but have yet to fit them, would that be a route worth going down or is it simply the battery volts issue (if there is one)? Thanks.
I'd say that 12.3v is bit on the low side. A good battery should be showing more like 12.7v. More important is what does it drop to when the starter is engaged?
I thought as much, i'l go check. I do believe it is the original battery so hopefully that is all it is. What i am wondering is how it may start after an hours ride tomorrow am then standing still for 3 hours? Don't wish to be left stranded in the centre of London! Would an hours ride give it a good start?
It was at 12.8 but dropped to 12.7 when starting. It didn't go first time and did the dash cutting out thing/clock resetting. And this is with Exact fit cables too.
Sounds more like a duff connection than a duff battery. Are you sure all the connections are clean and tight.
When you talk about the dashboard resetting at an indicated 12.7 then it's not the battery. Mine churns and starts well at 12.3 indicated ( after lights have reverted to sidelights only admittedly)
Check, clean or replace the ignition relay. Tucked away behind the coolant hoses near the pump. They get ditched and are a pain to get at so they usually get left alone til they fail
Started fine this morning, went for an hour run and it was fine. Left it standing for close to four hours and it started fine. Went and got petrol 20 minutes up the road and it played up a bit starting, but was fine all the way home. Might order an Odyssey battery to give it a help, and do the above (thanks Nelly) plus change the spark plugs. My neighbour said the battery gets a better charge while the bike is being ridden than the one it gets off of an Optimate; any truth in that?
It wa It wasn't till I stuck a new Yuasa in that I got full benefit from my starting circuit kit. Weathers been rubbish here, so I took it for the first ride for 6 weeks yesterday and without charging the battery, she fired up within a second or so. Good idea to change battery and relay while you're in there...
