Mac keeper

  1. Does anybody know anything about Mac keeper for Apple Mac computers?. I think my Mac is a little slow and keep seeing the advert for this on here and other sites. What I want to know is, if I download it will it sit there and improve things automatically or am I going to have to sit and learn all the computer jargon and carry out operations every time I want it to do something. As you can see I am a bit of a computer luddite and do not have the patience to learn how they work. They are supposed to work for me!!

  2. Do not use it - It's rubbish!

  3. Thanks Rob. Thats a clear no-no.

  4. How old is your Mac?

  5. Macbook Pro. About 5 years old

  6. A good old fasioned re-install works wonders now and again....for any OS on any device.

  7. As above - it's a piece of crap.
Reinstalling the system should help. Alternatively try running disk utility and Verify/Repair disk permissions.
If you have spare memory slot it may be worth adding some more RAM - you should be able to buy it reasonably cheap.
But the bottom line is - don't expect too much. It's a 5 year old laptop (albeit a good one) and it's getting close to the end of its life.

  8. Mac Keeper..its crap...and the pop ups are like chlamydia..a reinstall is a bit drastic isnt it? Ive never had to do that..thats more of a windows solution. OSX re boots a fresh operating every time its switched on.
Go to the Mac discussion boards as there are numerous ways to reboot OSX without having to reinstall it using various key commands to reset the PRAM for instance. this cures 99% of bugs. Also running disk utility or Mac Janitor are very good.

  9. I work in a Mac shop and have been advised by the gurus that MacKeeper is tosh. Forget.

5 years old? Yup. It's not getting any younger. Take the advice above. If that fails to provide a temporary fix (another couple of years) consider chopping it in. It's sad, but it's the way of computers and their planned obsolescence. A new one will be faster, but it's often not night and day for most tasks.

Save up for a 15" Retina. That really does move the game on a little in the Mac world at least. You'd be happy with that, I suspect. I'm against consumerism for the sake of it, but equally, life is too short to wait for videos to load and to hang around while your computer gets its shit together.

  10. Drastic.....yeah very. But guaranteed to make it run as well as it ever has done and can be done by even the most novice of computer users.

  12. Ideally you should backup everything on an external hard drive, wipe the hard drive completely using Disk Utility and install fresh system from a DVD which you got with your Mac. If you're running one of the latest versions of OSX (from Lion onwards) you have to create bootable thumb drive. Hope this helps
