900 SS Gearbox or selector woes ?

  1. Hi Gents, I almost came to a sticky end at the Ducati Cadwell Trackday on July 9[SUP]th[/SUP]. I was blatting down the start/finish straight just after lunch, on a nicely drying track, when I lost gear selection and drive. Thankfully I rolled onto the grass without coming a cropper. The chain had come off the rear sprocket, but was still in one piece. The marshal got me safely leant against a piece of Armco until the session ended and I was recovered to the paddock.

I luckily got me and the bike a lift home with a great guy, many thanks Paul - ( AKA Phaty on DUN I think.)

So – the engine will start, and seems to run OK, not for too long obviously - as gawd knows what is in the oil now. The clutch feels OK, but the gear selector shaft is locked solid.

I will start stripping her down at the weekend, - any comments on what might have happened ?? Photos etc to follow

  2. Oh dear has the chain holed the case?
    bent shift ratchet?
    bent shift forks?
I have parts of a 900ss gearbox in the shed if you need any bits
    good luck Steve B

  3. Just repaired a near identical fault on a DD bike. The selector had jumped the selector drum. Pull the alternator cover off, free it up and check the setting. This one had moved about 4mm, hence the over shoot and lock out.

  4. Many thanks for your comments Guys_ I am working Darn Sarf this week so will have to wait until the weekend to take the case off and have a look. The chain came off but did not snap; the Alt case better be OK 470Four - I fitted one of your Case Savers a couple of months ago !! I will keep you posted, cheers dp

  5. Well I am a lucky barsteward ! Darren's case saver did it's job and took quite a beating in the process. As nelly and 470four surmuised - the selector arm has jumped off the selector pins - but no damage done. Engine oil is clean, just need new case saver and new drive chain. Do I need to remove the alt to adjust the selector arms ? _ I will check the Haynes. Cheers Guys ! I have sent you a message on ebay Darren

  6. Superb! Happy for you, Mate! Just checked - the saver was bought in April which makes it a mk.3, the new mk.4's are 2mm thick so will be even better... :upyeah:

Has the spring broken at the elbow halfway up the selector arms?

Will message you on eBay re: replacement etc...

  7. Cheers - no broken springs, both the elbow spring and the one below are OK. Mk 4 looks the dogs doodahs !

Hope you can see that the outer arm is running clear of the pins ! From the lack of wear on the upper surface of the arm I would guess that it never been in the correct poisition, ie with it's "foot" in the central hole in the end of the drum and its upper and lower faces acting on the outer pins. So the only question is how to get the alt. nut off. I am favouring a 240v impact gun ( 450 nM!) from amazon, only £50 or so. Or should I be a bit more of an injineer and get an alt. holding tool?

  11. Back on the road with thanks to all for the advice and hardware. I fitted a gear selector from a 748 (ebay- although here was not much wrong with the old one - so if you need one drop me a PM.) Also fitted a new chain; and oil and filter as a precation. I bought a 240v impact wrench from amazon, quite a beast !! Now - when is that next trackday !!

  12. 470Four. You have saved me a hellova job. DS1000 - gear pedal not returning - Guessing broken spring was not difficult but looking at the factory exploded parts picture it looked like the crankcases needed to be split to replace it - and I'm not owning up to stupidity either - the picture is layed out like that. Stumbling upon your photos of the 900 - near enough similar - showed me that part of the selector is OUTside the crankcases in the alternator cavity. Phew - just in time - still a big enough hassle getting the flywheel off but since the job is 1/10 the of what I thought I'll keep on smiling.

  13. No worries! These are the pics I wanted to see before I took mine apart? The Haynes pics are in black & white and not always the photo you wanted to see?

Glad to be of service :upyeah:

    - was the battered state of Dave's saver, would have been an almighty mess if the chain did that to the alloy cases...

  15. I'm confused as to what made the drive chain jump off the sprocket, super loose?

  16. Me too... :frown:

    Shouldn't have happened, but did?

  17. No - not super loose - all clean and well adjusted - I can only assume that when the selector locked up it gave the chain a flick/whiplash that caused it to jump off !
