848 Modified Headlight

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by Bob T, Jan 20, 2016.

  1. I have now fitted the mark 1 modified headlight made from one that I bought on this forum. The original headlight off my bike will be made into the mark 2 version.
For those that may be interested:

  4. Cheers dude, what make of Bi-xenon kit is all i need really

  5. The bi-xenon projector is just a cheap (£15) ebay item, they all come from China. The HID kit to fit that is even cheaper from the same store, you will need the smallest ballast, see older post on my blog, and a H1 xenon bulb in the kit.
There are places in the US who will sell you a much more expensive bi-xenon projector, but you will probably find that it originates in the same part of China as mine.

  6. Cheers matey

  7. Bob, are you saying you can just flip the full beam side upside-down so the beam points downwards, and have both lights on at the same time? Or did i get that wrong?

  8. Yes the standard light may have two projectors, but they are both the same. The main beam projector is just an upside down dip beam projector. If you put the standard headlight on main beam against a wall then put your hand over the dip you will see that the main has an upside down cut off fitted. This is absolute nonsense as the removal of that little metal plate would give more light from the main beam side and save the weight of the metal plate and the screw in that projector. Ducati saved 30 seconds of someone's time by not removing that when the headlight was built.
If you just take a standard light and do nothing but turn the main beam projector upside down it will still only illuminate when the main beam is selected but will be a dip beam. To have both burning at the same time you need to slightly change some wiring.
If yiou are intending to split the headlight to do any of this then I would suggest that you just fit bi-xenon projectors in both sides and wire accordingly. Even if that is all you do and keep the 55 watt halogen bulbs, it will give you two dips and two mains - twice as much as standard.
If I am not making sense then PM me a landline phone number, and a time, and I'll be happy to give you a bell and discuss any questions that you might have.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  9. Thanks a lot Bob, understood. I actually have the hid lights in already but found when leaving both on i was getting flashed as blinding people. If i can just flip the hi beam so i have two equal lights then great.

  10. Put it up against a wall and you will see why you are getting flashed! If you just flip the left side projector then you can ride around with the main (high) beam selected as you will then have two dip beams, the problem is that you will not have a main (high) beam and I am not sure what the UK MOT would say to that, they may not like HIDs anyway.
As you have HIDs in both, where have you put both the ballasts?

  11. I'm no too fussed with having no main beam and know a good mot place ;). Not ideal i know but works.

I mounted mine via cable ties to the underside of the arms that take the fairing/windscreen. They just fit as to still allow full lock. Couldn't see anywhere else to be honest that they may fit.
The cables i drilled a small hole pointing to the floor on the black cap that seals each light from the elements.
