848 Changing 848 Sprocket Gearing, Will It Affect The Speedo.

  1. Being fairly new to the mechanical side of bikes and utterly useless with these things ive been advised to go up 3 teeth on the rear sprocket as im thinking of getting a new set and id like to increase the acceleration. However a friend pointed out this may make my speedo read incorecctly.

Are there ways around this etc?

  2. In a word: no.

  3. Your speedo pickup is on the rear wheel so sprocket size has no effect on the speedo. However you won't get a +3 sprocket on there with the stock chain length as it pulls the wheel so far forward that the tyre hits the swing arm. If you increase the length of the chain then you need to move the pin that restricts the adjustment on the inside of the caliper bracket or you won't be able to take up the chain slack.

You either need to do the above or go 1 down on the front (same gearing as 3 up on rear approx.) or just go 2 up which is what I run myself.

  4. You'll be fine ... speedo sensor reads from bolts on the rear disc i believe so gearing change is ok

  5. Going 2 up on the rear meant that you kept the stock chain length ?
What are the pros and cons of such a mod ?

    Thanks in advance

  6. I would go up 2 on the rear to keep stock chain, I may run out of adjustment with a 3

  7. Make sure you adjust your ride height, as 2 teeth will amend the wheelbse quite a bit

  8. In standard form the 848 has a fixed ride height rod and is not adjustable. If you adjusted the chain eccentric all the way from front to back (a huge distance that you would probably never do) then it would probably make no more than 10mm difference in ride height. I believe that you would need at least 30mm ride height adjustment for 99% of riders to feel any difference.

  9. 5mm most would feel as different imho, they may just not know why
