1098airbox Disassembly

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by RickyX, Feb 25, 2016.

  1. I am about to install a new air filter in my 1098 but wanted to take a look in the air box to see if there is any muck/dust in there due to the potential issue with Ducati oem filters not sealing properly.
Looking at my workshop manual - it does not say how to remove the "lid" of the air box.

Is it possible to do this without removing the entire air box and throttle bodies?

    Cheers,
    R

  2. You can't! It's a sealed unit - probably stuck together with something strong!

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  3. For my conversions I remove the 'lid' with a jig saw...;)

  4. I concur, it's a single item and cannot be split, unless you use a hammer. Found it odd when I took mine off that you can't open it for cleaning.

It's most likely dusty and dirty inside - as you say, the seals on filters are not very good.

The air-box does come off fairly easily, but you'll need to loosen off the throttle body worm clamps, crankcase breather pipe, injector connections, TPS sensors, throttle cables, fuel lines from tank..... hmm, bit of work there!!

  5. Thanks for the fast replies guys!
Took one air tube off, removed filter and used a torch. All nice and clean inside apart from oil haze. Glad I didn't jump in and start removing the air box!
Note I said I only took one air tube off...some fakker had over tightened one of the bolts on the other one so the threaded insert just spins in the plastic...excellent!
Oh well, glad I bought the Pipercross filter and not the individual MWR filter pods or I'd be swearing A LOT!
    Back to the shed....

  6. Can you let me know how you get on with the Pipercross RickyX, does it seem to seal better? i have followed your post when you asked Luigi moto, do you use them for your servicing?

  7. I stood the Ducati "Race" filter next to the Pipercross and there was no discernible difference in length.
I would guess that they both seal approximately the same.
Mind you, there was no crud in mi' box anyway so perhaps the sealing issue is an urban myth OR it only happens if the filter is not engaged correctly?
I have never used Louigi Moto but am planning to get my Ecu remapped by CJS next month.

  8. Thanks RickyX, I will check my airbox just in case, I am planning to get my ECU remapped as well, seems that Chris knows his stuff :sunglasses:

  9. I fitted k&n on my old 1098s and although the filter was about the same length as my dp one it came with thick sponge washers that bonded to the filter ends.
