I bought a side stand safety switch kit for my 1997 748S. Only trouble is, it doesn't have any fitting instructions, and the vendor hasn't replied to my emails Any clues as to how I should connect it? There is a relay, a black earth wire, a pair of wires with small connectors(one male, one female), a set of wires with a medium waterproof connector, and a set of wires with a breakout pair of large waterproof connectors (one male, one female). I think it goes something like this... Mount the relay on the frame near the battery. Black earth wire to battery negative. Pair of wires with small connectors break into neutral switch wire (there is a matching connector half way along the neutral switch wire) Wires with medium connector to side stand switch. Wires with breakout pair of connectors... the connectors are the same size as the connector going to the fuel pump/low fuel level sensor. Do they piggyback into this connection? Does anyone have any clues? Many thanks Kevin
Hi Kaos, its been about 4 years since i bought a side stand kit for my 748 but i dont remember all those wires and a relay in the loom? mine if i remember correctley went between the side stand switch and the plug beside the clutch cover, sorry i cant help you mine came from ebay, i dont have the bike anymore so i cant even go and have a look.
Thanks for your answer. Sounds like you are talking about the side stand switch bypass kit. That one allows you to start the bike with the side stand down, but cuts the engine if you put the bike in gear with the stand still down. My 748 didn't come with the side stand switch or wiring, just a side stand that automatically flips up when you ( or some nong in a bike park!) take the weight off it. I want to fit mine with the switch and associated wiring, like on the later models Kevin
Ah, yes there is. I bought one of those too, and the correct pivot bolt to fit it, and the correct plate for the return spring
I used this method to carry out the sidestand mod. Just have a read thriugh - it might help. View attachment Ducati kickstand mod.pdf I attached it on to the post, but I can email it to you if you pm me your email
Did this on my old 748R... Worked a treat... IIRC you need the Ducati cutout circuit to start with and not the flippy stand.
Cool. Then your assumptions above should work then. Can't see you damaging anything giving it a try. Wire it up, and test. Stand down = no pump at key on. Stand up then it should prime.
Thanks for your answer. Unfortunately, I need to fit the side stand wiring from scratch, not modify existing wiring. My bike didn't come with any wiring or side stand switch (pre-1999 model). It merely had a self retracting stand. Modifying that to NOT self retract lead to the inevitable "ride away with the side stand down" Fortunately I didn't crash, but I don't want to do that again!
ask yourself do you really need a side stand switch ? there was a thread on this site where somebody who relied on the switch had a switch malfunction and then had grief riding off with the stand down.............. First thing I did when I got my bike was remove the switch in its entireity - one less thing to go wrong
Didn't work! But it didn't damage anything either. Turns out the connector under the tank is the same size as the one leading from the right handlebar switch to the rear of the headlight. THAT is the correct location to plug into. SO it goes Mount the relay on the frame near the battery. Black earth wire to battery negative. Pair of wires with single pin small connectors break into neutral switch wire (there is a matching connector half way along the neutral switch wire) Wires with 3 pin medium connector to side stand switch. Wires with pair of 4 pin connectors break into the right handlebar switch wire at the rear of the headlight, right hand side. Works perfectly!
