Air Duct Wire Mesh...

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Ben Mallinson, Mar 26, 2016.

  1. Another job on my 'to do list' is replace the wire mesh within the air vents on my 1198 as they have seen better days. I am planning on sourcing a sheet and trimming to correct shape myself to hopefully achieve a good fit.

Anyone have experience in doing this on your own machines and willing to share any tips? Also looking for a supplier of said mesh if anyone has any recommendations.

    Cheers,
    Ben

  2. Have you seen the built in indicator ones on this forum? I thought about doing it on my 848 but that got written off in the end. They look good though.

I have seen those and I must say, they do look smart. I already have indicators within the tail/stop lights and some nice 5p sized button turn signals in the duct mesh which I'd like to retain. personal preference and all that but I like what I have already

  4. B&Q have some decent mesh in. If not, plenty of car tuning shops have it or eBay. I've found heat resistant silicon sealer good for sticking them on.

  5. I got a sheet of black alloy mesh and some finer stainless stuff off ebay to make oil cooler covers and other stuff, got it with larger holes than Ducati use so it flows more air, doesn't clog up with crud but keeps stones etc. out, plenty of it on ebay.

Easy enough to bend and stick in place.

  6. Did the same thing last year. You can get the proper mesh from Ducati for a reasonable price and comes pre cut and bent to size. Push into place and hot glue gun. Takes seconds.

  7. Thanks Heydn.

I actually quite like the tinkering aspect of doing things myself when possible, especially when my bikes are off the road for the winter. Find when it emerges from the Garage the following year it is very satisfying to see what has been achieved in some proper daylight. Maybe a little sad but just one of the pleasures of being a motorcyclist for me...

I will however keep this in mind should I run short of time next winter and not get round to making my own.

    Cheers,
    Ben.

  8. Hi Ben, the reason i suggested this is because i tried the DIY mesh first but fine mesh was too floppy and the course mesh looked like a rabbit hutch. The genuine stuff holds itself in place so you only need a small amount of hot glue or epoxy. I rebuilt my 916 last year and the genuine stuff looked better imo. See how you get on!

  9. Thanks Haydn, points duly noted and will bare these in mind when sourcing materials. If the worst comes to the worse and my efforts also result in me not being happy with the finished results I can always replace with dealer supplied replacements.

I will let you know how I get on when I get round to having a go at them.

    Thanks again,
    Ben
