1200 Budget Chain And Sprocket Replacement

  1. It'll probably only be about a month or so before I trade in the Multistrada, but it's got ~16,500 miles on the original chain, and I've got to do a trip from northern England to Belgium and back, with pillion and luggage, and I've got something of a reputation for breaking chains ... [0]

I'm not bothered about getting 20,000+ miles out of the next chain and sprocket, and the dealer isn't going to give me extra trade-in value because I've paid for a premium rear sprocket.

I've found a chain and sprocket kit for £195 ... anybody know of anything cheaper?

And do I need any special tools? I've already got the massive socket for the big nut (assuming that it's the same as the one on the wheel side); anything else?

[0] To be clear: I snapped a chain in France, once, about 14 years ago, but I'm never going to be allowed to forget about it.

  2. What I would do, and probably will do is to make my own kit.

The chain is a 530 with 108 links, like this DID VX series.

And the 42 tooth rear sprocket is supposed to be an excellent upgrade, a swift google turned this up. Out of stock at the moment but they will probably have them soon, they have the 40's

You will also need the socket for the front sprocket nut and a new lock washer is recommended but providing you fold it in a different place it should be ok to use again. You will also need a torque wrench and breaker bar, those nuts are tight.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  3. Good call. That comes out around £175, compared to the cheapest I found elsewhere of £195.
Just a bit. I already have a selection of scaffold poles to put on my breaker bar, and I even bought myself a beefier breaker bar after watching the way my 3/8" bar was curving when I last took the wheel off ... :anguished:

  4. Just looked it up
    Front sprocket = 186 Nm
Eccentric hub pinch bolts = 35 Nm
    Rear wheel nut Left/Right = 230 Nm
Cush drive retaining nut = 44 Nm

My collection of torque wrenches is growing, just had to buy a Norbar TTi 250 (40-250 Nm) This is number 4.

  5. Throw a DID chain on it & anyone sensible will see you've not been a cheap arse with important stuff.

  6. Do you already have the tool(s) to join the ends of the new chain together?

  7. I did mine recently, bought the tool from eBay and it lasted exactly one use before bending [emoji106]

  8. Yes.

The more important question is: can I find it?

  9. You didn't use it to drive the pins out without grinding the heads off first, did you? That's what often kills them. The one I've got wasn't an expensive one, but I haven't managed to break it yet.

  10. I filed the heads first. It was using it to peen/rivet the heads (the final part). It worked but bent, finished it off with a peen hammer.

  11. Oh, that's not so good ...

Mind, none of the professional mechanics I know use a fancy tool anyway, and that's probably why.

  12. If it's only short term, are you sure you need new sprockets? I am sure that back in my early days of motorcycling it was not unusual to change the chain only (usually not sealed link of course, so they did not last long) unless the sprocket teeth were visibly "hooked".

  13. JP make good chains and sprockets.

  14. The wear is more obvious on the sprocket than on the chain, although the chain measures at being over its replacement limit.

If I turn up for the trade-in with the sprocket looking like it is, they'll probably knock their offer down by the cost of the whole lot at OE prices plus dealer labour rates.

  15. JP? Are you sure you don't mean JT?

  16. I thought the same... especially as I'm currently running a JT one myself [emoji6]
