Hi, Thanks for taking the time to read my post. Whilst riding to work this morning my bike cut out and the amber EOBD light came on without warning. Not knowing what happened I turned it off and thought I'd try and start it again but when I turned the ignition on I got a buzzing/ clicking sound that seemed to be coming from the battery area. All the dials came to life but it wouldn't start. I suffered the embarrassment of pushing my bike the remaining few hundred yards through the town centre to my office (it was raining too). I've gone to look at it during my break and when I turn the key I still get the buzzing sound for a few seconds, I can hear the fuel pump but there is nothing on the LCD display and the needle on the ref counter is at 13,000. Anyone had similar problems before or can give me a hint where to start looking?
Pull the furthest forward fuse in the headlight fuse box. Right side of headlight and refit. That should reset dash. Is the orange light still on? Is so, then hold the left dash button down whilst switching on the ignition. Keep the button held down and note the fault codes after EFI appears on the screen. Only works if you hold the button down.
At the moment when I turn the ignition on, there are no lights come on above the display (ie the amber engine light, the neutral light etc) and the headlight is extremely dim. Makes me think the battery is dead, but it shouldn't cut out while riding surely. I'll investigate further this evening with your comments and report back...........
Will you keep this post updated with your results please, never know when my 749 is going to play up in a similar situation. Guvs.
Not to be a Jonah, but the 749 wiring looms are not great and can corrode badly if neglected. The main earths and +ve wires all crimp together behind the battery box and if rot gets in there all sorts of issues can occur.
"when I turned the ignition on I got a buzzing/ clicking sound " that's 100% low voltage situation. Your battery got drained to the point that it is way way below 12V and cannot energize coils in relays, therefore you hear audible buzzing. Nothing wrong with your relays, it is likely that your charging stopped due to massively corroded contacts and ignition/lights just drained battery to the point you cannot start it now. Current demand on idle is significantly lower than on startup condition. I would recharge your battery and check all connectors on charging system (alternator to reg/rec and then reg/rec to battery). Consult manual for location of connectors (they are nicely coloured in photos on some pages) and try to clean them. Good replacement for spade connectors are furukawa or "metri pack" waterproof connectors. I have them on my 749 and never had problems since. They are not expensive, very common and avoid ebay for overpriced listings of them. The set of them can be bought for about <£12 from major electronics websites. search "easternbeaver" for connectors or Digikey/Farnell etc
The position of some very important connections are right behind the front wheel, great positioning Ducati! Keep them clean and you shouldn't have an issue.
