'Milky' carbon

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by efcbluepete, Oct 20, 2012.

  1. Hi,

trying to get photo from iPhone to iPad to upload, but struggling.

front mudguard has started to go a little cloudy/milky in places (mostly right at front end).

anybody experienced it, and found how to cure it?

    cheers,

    pete

  2. Here goes with cut n paste...

  3. "muc-off" and other similar cleaners can cause this? Seems to be something off the road tho??

  4. Osmosis....................No, not the name of the bloke that made it.....(that was Osibisa......not really).....

....There is a lot of carbon fibre out there that isn't.......well, it is, but it's only a top layer, with glassfibre underneath...either to keep the cost down to give a good profit, or to give the product to you at a low price (a bit too altruistic, I think)....Not saying that's waht your is though.....but...

...that looks like water and salts getting in between the layers, because the resin is a bit skant......

Two cures......cut it back, or get a layer over the top........Third cure, buy a new one.

  5. Rub it down with fine wet n dry, but be careful not to go into the weave, then build up coats of clear lacquer. Don't try to do it too thick, it'll fuck up.

  6. If that's salt it will still keep coming through to the top....effervecense.

  7. Cheers chaps. Will try the wet n dry followed by lacquer as a first step. Was on the bike when I bought her over 3 years ago, so no idea of the quality, etc.

  8. I've got a Ducati Corse hugger that's exactly like that. I can't be arsed spraying it so I just give it a rub over with GT85 now & then, which means I'll probably never be able to spray it now, but it looks ok for a few days.

  9. Like the new tag you have, Rob. Surely 'Senior Farmers' would suit better? ;-)

  10. I agree, but just like the Emmas, I had no choice in the matter....

  11. Got some for my 30th - nice present! I recall "finding" my secret present when showering on the morning of my birthday, that was very depressing, but nowhere like your set.

  12. UV light makes the gel coat in some carbon parts go milky

  13. Sorry to be a pedant.

Effervescence - escape of gas from a liquid, ie fizzy drink

Perhaps you meant efflorescence - salt deposits on the surface of masonry and concrete. The reason the salt keeps coming through is water released from the hydrated cementitious component, so not really applicable here.

No harm in trying a little wet'n'dry and lacquer.

  14. Thanks for that.......I knew what I meant and it didn't look right when I spelled it.......It was part of my working life to prevent it from happening on brickwork as well!

Put it down to the steroids I'm on, giving me brainstorms....
