Clutch has felt a bit rough for a day or 2 and today made strange whirring noise and bit of a clonk on release and staggered launch(normal pull away). Did it 3 or 4 times out of 50 and felt okish otherwise. I pulled off the pressure plate and a few plates and discovered badly worn push rod see pics. Wtf is causing this? All bearings feel ok on basket in clutch hub and p.plate. Cheers guys. Keith.
Mmmm, interesting bit of lathe work. Its not stuck in the plate bearing is it?So as to be spinning all the time and wearing away on the inside of the input shaft?
Yes its stuck in the top hat bush that fits in the bearing like they always are but the bearing in the p.plate is fine.
The thing that concerns me is its worn away along all the centre section of the rod, just the ends are original dia. Also I presume that swarf is in my oil.
Can you looking down/through the hole? Is it clear? Could it have been fitted with some crap on it last time it was out and its been grinding away?
it's usually from 'debris' Keith and bearing (npi) in mind not much in the way of foreign bodies can get in there it's often as Derek suggested.
i would agree , from the looks of the mid shaft it look like a needle has been trapped in there and working it way to and thro the shaft , as for the oil ooh yeah i would be definitely be changing it and pull the mesh filter checking for fragments and debris . i have a hiflo filter here if you need one quickly mate , i'll pop it over to you in the morning if you need it .
On brief check the roller bearing looked fine. Will have better look tomorrow. Changed one in 907 last year, pig to get out.
have you got the large allen key for the mesh filter plug and to pull the mesh filter ? i have one if you need it
Deep sump have different mesh filter arrangement thanks. Probably wont look til next week. Time to get the thinbike on road for a bit.
Ive just had a good look at the hub side needle bearing in the output shaft and they're all there. Bits of swarf in the mesh filter as expected. None the wiser as to what caused the push rod to wear like that.
Which part is worn/machined? Is it the section between the two o rings and the pressure plate? If so, I believe that this section is meant to have a smaller diameter.
It is meant to be thinner and they're not highly polished so look a bit rough but I've not seen one quite that rough. Looks like something might have been going round with it and I can't see that there's much could get in there except a roller from the bearing? As long as it's not bent or the machined ends damaged it should still be OK to use though. The bearing, oil seal and 'O' rings are cheap enough but the old bearing can be tricky to get out, I changed them on both my bikes, the one in the 916 came out easily enough but I had to Dremel the Monster's out.
Yep did one last year. Pig to get out. I found stud extractor and mole grips got the fkr out after a few hours struggling and swearing. The bearing looks good. The bottom allen bolt from the slave was missing so slave might've moved about a bit but I think I'm clutching at straws there. Bikes in the hall now, I'll clean and recheck the needle bearing under spotlight later.
All rollers present and correct. I'm wondering if the inner lip of the cage has fractured and wandered up the hollow shaft?
For what it costs, I'd probably change the bearing anyway. Have you removed the left side engine case? because there is a place where debris could enter (if there was any present) just under the gearshift linkage where the oil gets in; Above pic from a 900 2V but the same design (I would think?)...
