1200 DVT Phantom Oil Consumption

  1. My DVT which has done approx 8000 miles uses half the oil sight glass (brimmed at top mark) in just over 600 miles.

As a meticulous owner I don't like starting a trip without all levels being tip top! My dealer has told me this is a mistake with a DVT as any filling above the mid level just gets blown past the pistons due to crankcase compression on the down stroke and that all DVTs should not be filled beyond the half way sight glass. As long as you can see oil on the glass even below the lower mark it will be fine.

In contrast my old single spark Mutley used no discernible oil between services from the top mark. We live and learn and I'll keep you posted over the summer.

  2. Why not try filling to half way between the upper and lower level marks as your dealer suggests and check it after 300 miles?

  3. Sounds utter bollox to me. Don't fill to the upper line?!

  4. My DVT will "use" oil when ridden hard, high revs that is, on day to day use it doesn't use much oil at all. Most noticeable when doing long motorway / autoroute / autobahn miles at a constant high (ish) speed. The same thing happened on my 2010 and 2013 Mutley's so not something I worry about just keep an eye on it on long trips.

  5. Quentin ..... how did you run the bike in ?

  6. Mixed pace 600 miles with lots of gear usage and not much over 6000 and then a spirited ride to Bologna with my wife and other pals. No freeway

  7. Sounds like the old days: advice in 916/996 era was to fill to the lower line on the sight glass and just keep an eye on it. I keep my single spark at the upper line (how the dealer left it at last change)- to get it down, I'd have to siphon, as my '10 uses no oil whatsoever - a first in my Ducati experience.

  8. My 2015 multi has 14k miles and when ridden hard burns about 500mL every 1000 miles. Dealer checked with service rep and Ducati said its "within spec". I've replaced fuel gauge sending unit 4000 miles, kickstand - recall, front pads this week ($300 for 2 pair!) 4 rear tires and the air filter which was full of dirt on both sides, and coarse sand in the air box AFTER the filter all around the throttle body intake. No clue how that got there. Air filter is a 1 hour job by the dealer.

  9. love this ride though. I'll be in for first Desmo service in middle of June. Can't ride it enough!!

  10. There are threads about oil usage, mine does use oil when on motorway Journey's it seems

  11. Hmmm ... coarse sand getting into the engine ... excessive oil consumption ... what a coincidence!

  12. Ditto, my 2010 doesn't use a drop no matter how hard I ride it! Motorway or twisties, always fill to a smudging below the max mark
