Angle grinder 14mm shaft vs 5/8" shaft

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by efcbluepete, Oct 25, 2012.

  1. Not sure if anybody can help, but worth a try.

got a makita 9005b angle grinder (in shed at home), and want to pick some wire brush and similar disks on way home.

manual I have downloaded says 5/8 shaft thread, but all the cup type wire brushes I can find are 14mm (threaded).

anybody know if they are 5/8 for sure? Would a 14mm nadge on there, or am I best seeking out one with a clearance hole and just relying on the shaft and nut supplied.

    cheers,

    pete

  2. Pete, first thing to check is the o/d of the thread on the shaft, looked at a similar Makita grinder and the thread size is 14mm. I checked the parts diagram below and the nut is listed as 14/45 (also 14mm but 45mm o/d), unless yours is an old one. If yours is indeed 5/8 the diameter across the thread is probably around 15.8mm if its BSF, UNC or UNF. Should be easy to measure. You can buy 14mm shafts for around £20. Not sure if this is teaching you how to suck eggs but hope it helps all the same.

  3. Cheers Denzil. Is indeed an old one, but didn't think of changing the shaft out.

  4. Pete, best check with the dealer just in case, don't forget the other bits which will need to match the new shaft if you get one (washer and lock nut for starters)

  5. Yeah, along with not thinking about the shaft replacement, never thought through the peripheral changes needed... Maybe just a clearance hole wire brush with standard locknut will suffice for now.

Already got brushes for use in drill, just thought the angle grinder would be a bit more aggressive to get the job in hand done a tad quicker.

  6. Ummm take the grinder with you and try them in the shop? :upyeah:

I'm on my third 115mm grinder.
