Hi Having startup issues on my 2012 hyp 1100 evo, 39k miles so not suprized.. I want to replace the starter with a good used item but dont know what is compatible. Symptoms, slow to crank, used to start instantly, didn't hear it cranking before Replaced original battery, no change, fitted Exact start cables, no change, removed starter to check brushes (4) & cleaned armature segments, alllooked reasonable, reassembles, still the same. I read on another forum that the Taiwain starters now used are not as good as the Japanese Denso items, question is what fits the evo motor?
Check the below, kindly donated by The Duke of Stow... 1. Battery. Need to check the battery is in good condition. Should be around 12.8 volts with no load (alarms off) fully charged. When you crank the starter the battery voltage will dip, but should be no less than about 9 volts. 2. Starter. May have bad brushes or burned windings. Good indication is if the battery leads are getting hot indicating it is drawing a lot of current. 3. Solenoid. May have burned or pitted contacts. One way of telling is to do a voltage drop check. One lead of the meter on the + ve the other on the solenoid contact. Thumb the starter and check the voltage drop, it should be no more than 0.3 to 0.5 volts in theory, but this may be difficult to see as the moment the starter is pressed the starter motor is pretty much a dead short across the battery.
Thanks, Checked for voltage drop, disconnected cable to starter at solenoid to test, all ok., though that was after i removed the solenoid case & cleaned out with brake cleaner, didnt strip beyond this to contacts as not sure how it came apart & i need to use tomorrow morning. any piccies ok total solenoid strip?
Not sure if you can strip them - never looked, new ones are cheap from what I've read on here. Someone will know.
Some Solenoid info here... http://ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/bike-wont-start-starter-relay-no-click.2364/
Hi... Recently had starter issues. Bridged solonoid, no life. Put feed direct to starter, no life. Removed starter and opened her up... Eaten up bushes and that thing in the middle was poked.. Toyed with a aftermarket starter (£120) but the bike (998) is low mileage and very tidy and wanted to keep original so bit the bullet and bought a replacement original part through ducati (£360), as figured I was saving £ by doing the work myself. Also, As you have to drain oil and fluids I didn't want to be doing that again soon if aftermarket part was a duffer. Combined with @Exige cables, she pretty much fires into life before I can hear any starter motor noise.
Bike now starting better since cleaning solenoid but still not how it was, I have another solenoid coming so will replace if no better will look for another starter, need to compare part numbers to see what options are.
