That piece is a standard Italian no. plate holder, fitted to all bikes (in Italy) as it is the 'official' size, shape & hole positions for an Italian plate. I have one knocking about somewhere from the 916 that I removed straight away as I couldn't see the point of something that serves no purpose and adds weight. If you want it (and if I can find it) you can have it.
Got one, not the one I was looking for as I can't find it due to having moved everything during a recent workshop re-vamp, but I 'discovered' the original rear mudgaurd/plate holder assembly from the Monster has one on it. There's a bit of corrosion as it was fitted to a bike for 10 years and just to confirm it's the correct part, I've attached a pic. If it's good, PM me your address and I'll send it to you.
You beat me to it Tim. I still have the one that I removed from my first 916, it's never been on the road, so if anyone else needs one drop me a PM - it will clear a small space in my spares box.
Not sure what Sim900 wants it for? if it's just to fit a number plate onto then either will do but if he wants to make his bike original/concours etc then Steve's 'virgin' one may suit him better? -As you can see mine's a bit scruffy and someone's drilled a couple of extra holes in it. My advice to Sim900 is take your pick from these two, no worries either way for me.
