I didn't think you could replace the LEDs in the Ducati auxillary lights. If it is possible I'd be interested to know how as I have an old lamp unit in which the LEDs have failed. It might be easier and cheaper to use a blue filter on the outside of the lenses. Maybe something pained on because of the convex shape in the centre of the lens.
You can change any LED if you can identify it. They are probably a model of Cree LEDs. It is illegal to show a blue light to the front of a motor vehicle.
It also reduces usable light to virtually zero, so you could achieve the same effect by simply removing the aux. lights altogether
A summary of the regs is as follows: "You can only have a steady white light to the front and a steady red light showing to the rear of your vehicle. The exceptions to this are: BLUE flashing from an emergency vehicle flashing or constant from a police vehicle" They do not define exactly what the mean by blue, but all of the blue LEDs that I have worked with could never be described as not quite blue!
My understanding of the relevant section in the UK legislation doesn't differentiate, it just says a blue light. That said I have never seen a vehicle stopped for displaying a blue light. It would take 60% of lorries and every BMW driven by a chave off the road . Andy
I think the best option is to have some super bright aux lights. When filtering (London rider), with low beam, high beam and aux lights on, people tend to move over. I think the repercussions of getting caught displaying blue lights would be too big to risk. You've only got to get up behind a plain car and they'll have you over in a flash (excuse the pun). The fact your road positioning and speed will be suggesting they move over, will also go some way to show you intend to purport to be a police rider. Seriously, filtering I find no problem. Any cars still in your way are usually so oblivious, a real police bike wouldn't get them to move. With cars hogging the fast/middle lanes, one or two flashes of my aux lights and any cars usually move over. Any that don't are the same oblivious people that wouldn't notice a neon rhino emitting the noise of a hard house rave. Those people, I must admit to getting wound up and being naughty, I usually undertake and cut rather close to them and then point to the lane they should be in. The ones that really puzzle me are the fast lane hoggers on an empty stretch who move to the middle lane to let you pass and then move right back once you've passed?!? Cocks!
I think that perhaps I haven't explained myself properly guys. Basically a guy at work has a white ex police Honda Pan European. His sidelights/aux lights have the blue leds, you know the sort, if you look in your mirrors and se them then you are convinced Dibble is following you. lol Mutley is white so I think you can see where I'm going with this...
You want bulbs in the temperature range below then, the higher the bluer. Just read my post above though. 15,000–27,000 K - Clear blue poleward sky
How I love a bit of Hard House lol 1988 Summer of Love, Acid House etc Point taken JH, I have placed Mutley right on the wing mirror of cars before peeps finally look and see him. Fcuckin nob ends, I do try not to lose my rag but its difficult not to. Even pulled next to one dude on the M42 who was watching a video on his iPhone.....
I would think a self entitled attitude combined with blue lights would be a recipe for disaster. There are so many different levels of driver and riders, intrusions on your space are constant in cities and busy motorways and ya gotta make your way through without getting personally offended.
Sorry TaskMule but I don't entirely agree. I don't feel its a case of feeling 'self entitled' as I don't think its too much to ask for in others just to be that little bit more aware of what's going on around them and to keep an eye on their mirrors for bikes. Am I a perfect rider or driver? Absolutely not. As for not getting offended by them you are right, keep a cool head when you can. Sometimes though that can be real difficult.
Having spent much of my life driving/riding in the UK as wells as France and Germany, I would think that the jacket in the picture above would wind up any UK motorist as much as criticising his driving would. How would you deal with the road rage afterwards? Fit blue lights and then pretend that you might be a copper could also piss people off.
It may as well read, self intitled cunt. Not just motorcyclists though, there's a fair few car drivers and cyclist I'd happily hand those ones out to. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
