748 748s Performance

  1. An 853 can run with all the standard 748 parts with just a chip change or it can go as wild as you want with shower injectors R cams etc. So visually it can look totally standard.

  2. Thats what I though, so matey is going to have to open it up to check by the sound of it if its a 748 engine number, unless the eprom shows something

    However most of these acronyms mean nothing to me, maybe because I'm foreigner, maybe because I'm not a mechanic, probably because of both reasons

    Anywho.. Here's the ECU:

    Now I'm officially confused.com .. I thought mine was an S model, not a Biposto (althought it does have two seats, but so do the S' no?)
     
  4. Bip was a term usd for two seater rather than model iirc, although cant remember with the very early ones (what age is it?). Second version was E, S and R. I had an E and it didnt have adjustable steering angle where I think the S did. Does yours?
     
  5. Mine is 2001, and it does havd adj.steering angle .. so S it is then?

    By the way am I going to fuck anything up by using this product?

    Bike sat in a garage for about 6 years.. I did a full service, including fuel filter, thought she might like/need it?

  7. As has been mentioned there's a fair probability it is an 853 conversion, I would say the marks on the head are for marking the cams and setting the cam timing and also\possibly the shimming of the valves.

    It is also possible to use something like 916 cases but still have 748 internal parts. The engine number is not a total indicator of what's inside the engine.

    You clearly have a 1.6 M ECU so the engine will be quite possibly based around a 748 of some description up to and including a 748R. If you look at the injectors you will be able to tell the size, and you cannot fit 748R injectors in a standard adjustable headstock frame as they won't fit. The 748R airbox is also different. You will need a 748R or 998 frame for that. The 998 frame would need to be slightly modified to alter the placement of the HT coils. A stock frame can be modified but that is a lot more work. Pierobon in Italy used to specialise in work like this

    As above my bet is it some sort of conversion possibly with the addition of sportier cams like 748SPS or 748R.

    A run on a dyno would give you some idea but is not a total indicator. A well tuned 748 with the addition of head work and SPS\R cams and 748R pistons can put out about 115 bhp at the back wheel plus, see below.

    Here is one example done by CJS for my sons track bike when used in the Maxxis 748 challenge. BHP had to be limited to 110 plus 10% to be eligible.

    This bike started off as a humble 748 biposto.

  8. The Eprom is a year 2000 standard 748 Bip so my guess is you have a standard motor that has been rebuilt at some time.

    Doubt an 853 conversion would have been left with standard chip! very few can reprogram a chip and if they did they would surely indicate that on the label?
     
  9. What year is the bike? Year 2000 bikes were the beginning of the E period although they were not referred they were a more basic bike with changes made to several items which lowered the specification of the bike. This went on for a couple of years until the 748E was officially introduced introduced in 2002 I believe. 1997 to 1999 Bip's also has a sticker on the frame which stated it was a 748S and this has been the cause of confusion with some.

    If your is a year 2000 standard bip originally it would have had a non adjustable headstock.

If it was me I'd take a plug out and use a bore scope to have a look at the top of the piston, maybe some identifying marks on the crown.853 conversation will work with standard 748 throttle bodies but most have been up graded to 916 bodies as there bigger. But the only was to really check is to strip the motor and measure the bore or piston.
     
  12. So, correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me I shouldn't proceed with a valve clearance check and adjustment unless I'm sure of what engine/camme/valves are fitted, right? Or does standard specs apply regardless of the kit?

  13. Sorry missed that bit so you have a later 748S that is pre stepped motor. As mentioned a bore check or a head off job is required to really identify what you have.

    It should not stop you setting valve clearances but you might want to check if the cams have been timed either with offset woodruff keys or adjustable pulleys. Either method would indicate some sort of engine work and if it was me then I would start to investigate a bit further to know exactly what I do have. I can't see anyone making a comment about the bikes capacity if they had not done any work to it.

  17. Difference in 748 tb's is there stepped inside 916 ones are flush all the way down. Open the butterfly and have a look is the easiest way to tell.

  20. 748 throttle bodies mate,looks like the valve ports could have had a bit of work.
