Drilled out the rivets on the old plate, drilled and slightly bent the new plate to fit the curve of the can, and riveted the new plate into place. I guess it could be stuck on given suitable high temp adhesive. Note that the original holes in the can aren't straight - it's not me misaligning things, honest.
