Hi Robarano, the legs were £440 then the cost of servicing and fitting.... I got a bit of a deal but the chap said it would usually be a £700 job!
The Front Axel Alignment Tool is only about £10 from Machine Mart. That said, I just stuck a screwdriver in the slot to hold the spindle in place last time I did mine but having read your story I might be a little more careful in future penmouth:
You could try that method but it does not sound good. Better to give it to a local machine shop who could do it in 15 minutes. After all it is a very important part that needs special care and not a lump hammer.
Think of the shiny bar being oval, the bearing touches the extremities of the oval base circle and you apply forward pressure, this eases the ovality back into the circle shape. Get it?
No not Dumb, just asking questions.... No because the tool piece has a Bearing that rotates with the spindle, so they rotate together.
But I would machine a collar with the correct thread matching the spindle thread, so that it would cause no damage. There are lots of ways to not damage the thread. This is just one idea.
The fork clamps would never put a spindle out of round before they snapped. If they did, you wouldn't be able to remove the spindle through the bearings.
