Best Clear Tank Protector

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by RC1, Jul 31, 2016.

  1. I know theres a lot of choice out there but im looking for something clear and indiscreet that does what it says on the tin and stays put

  2. I got a sheet of VentureShield then made a template with tracing paper from the tank then cut the pieces out of the VentureShield.
Applied the ventureshield as per the fitting instructions, its been on 6 years no discolouration and you have to look hard to spot it.

You can buy a good size sheet from ebay

  3. I've got ventureshield too. Excellent stuff.

  4. In the old days when trying to protect protect mountain bike frames we used to use something called heli tape, it sounds similar to ventureshield.

  5. Venture Shield again. I fitted the Ducati clear tank pad to my SF. i took it off again. It didn't look discreet, just odd. Out of the corner of your eye it looked like the paint had bubbled. And the tiniest air bubble will be immediately visible. VS really is virtually invisible and its much more forgiving to apply.

  6. I dont trust my cutting so went for a guff motrax one that was cheap on flea bay. I couldnt seem to find the ventureshield sheet in the right size in the uk?

  7. Helicopter tape. Usually applied to the leading edge of helicopter rotor blades.
Got some and it's awesome. Only realised the other week that it's self healing.

  8. That's exactly the job Venture Shield was developed to do, in desert conditions where the sand destroys rotor blades.

  9. From looking at the ventureshield I have on 2 bikes, I would imagine repeated rubbing of leathers and zips would scratch it quite badly. Yes, it's doing the job it's designed for in protecting your paintwork, but it'll look shabby. You can get some tank protetors that look nice and are quite durable in plain black (you can also get some awful ones)

  10. VS is very resistant to scratching, certainly tougher than paint and lacquer. I had a full kit on a white Speed Triple and it didn't even really show the dirt around the edges which I had expected with white paintwork. It doesn't discolour with age either. You can fit it with confidence for the long term.
I wish I'd had the full kit fitted to my SDR. I've had most of it done but I'd already applied the black KTM tank pads because I like the look of them. Now the large tank sections of the VS can't be fitted unless I remove the tank pads, and they aren't cheap. What I should have done was fit the VS first and put the tank pads over the top for cosmetic purposes. Another useful feature is you can fit rigid carbon tank pads. They're not necessary once the VS is on but they look cool. Trouble is fitted directly they can scratch an outline onto the paint, but if you've fitted VS fist there's no problem
One thing though, it needs to go onto pristine paintwork. If you've already got stone chips and you put VS over the top it'll make them look worse. Steve at Conquest Carbon can tell you much more about it. He sells it and he's very good at fitting it. He's pretty clued up on the stuff.
