Disappointed to find the panniers and top box shiny paint parts scratch so easily. They have not seen heavy use, just a sleeping bag mattress rolled up and strapped on top of the top box, and it must be mine/pillions boots catching on the panniers occasionally. I would have expected them to be able to cope with that. The scratches are quite light, I've tried t-cut and polish and they have reduced but not perfect yet. Any ideas? Thinking to change to an enduro next year. Anyone know if enduro panniers/top box are they made of sterner stuff?
Yeah enduro has aluminium panniers, which also gives greater security & a seating option when wild-camping. All you've done is create some character & talking point don't beat yourself up over it.
I don't think T-Cut or similar is abrasive enough for deeper scratches. However, it's a fine line! Some time ago I bought an aerosol touch-up kit for my car and it included primer, top coat, lacquer and a small bottle of a cutting/rubbing compound described simply as "liquid polish" which was able to take the top coat to an almost mirror finish (from my original orange-peel) before putting the lacquer on. I have since used this to remove scratches on a couple of occasions. The supplier is Paints4U on ebay, and if you search for that name and "scratch" you'll see they do repair kits for cars which include the polish; I haven't searched to see if they do Ducati kits!
Not losing sleep over it, but will make sure I get more robust ones before I go on a longer tour Thanks everyone. I will give it a try. I am sure I can polish them out. Just disappointed that I need to. Doesn't Ducati realise these things are supposed to get used?
Where in Yorkshire are you ? I polished mine with a machine polisher ( it's my job) if they're only light they should come out ! T-cut and the like isn't what it was .. Lol
I'm about 10 mins from sherburn are you off up tomorrow we can have a look ! I tend to use fastcut ( a corse compound) and work back with finer grades of polish . They may need flating first with 2000 sand paper .not for the faint hearted if you break through its repaint time !! Our lass is always dragging a boot over getting on n off sofar I been lucky and polished em out !
