1200 Battery Goes Flat After 1 Week

  1. Is this normal? Its only 18 months old.

  2. either you have a drain on the system...

or the generator (ducati speak for alternator) is not pumping out enough watts hence eventually your battery runs out as its servicing your electrics while the engine runs...

(mine went after 1 year, but since then ok).

to diagnose, start bike up and measure volts - there is a procedure somewhere and if its not xx.v volts then alternator packed in.

or take to ducati and they have diagnostics..

could also be rectifier (which is cheaper) but more likely to be generator.

  3. Cheers, I'll get the dealer to check it when I can find the time to drop it in. They need to fix the fuel sender too. Fortunately, none of this spoils the riding experience....

  4. Don't know if this relates to the newer bikes, but it was always important to leave the bike with the red ignition/starter switch in the up/off position, or that caused a minor current drain that would flatten the battery?

  5. I've heard the generator also only kicks in above 3k revs... You might need to ride it harder :tearsofjoy:

Mines got a tracker and the battery does like to be on an Optimate pretty constantly.

  6. The red switch is simply an engine shut off, it makes no difference which position it's in once the bike has been shut down.

  7. I too have heard mentioned that it constantly seeks the key when the switch is left down. It's this that causes a battery drain. Don't know how true this is, simply what's been heard.

  8. the key sensor antenna under the faring is only activated when the bike is powered up.
For the original poster, if the battery has gone flat a few times then it will need to be replaced as it will never hold a full charge again. It's possible this is all due to a bad battery

  9. It's probably my own fault rather than the battery. I left it for 3 months while I was away without charging and it started no problem when I got back, so thought it would carry on like this. It did for a couple more times. Now it dies after a week of being stood. Think I'll be buying a new battery and connect the optimate in future.
I put the optimate on the current battery and after a few hours the battery was really hot so took it off again. Don't want it to catch fire!

  10. Have just had the same symptoms on a 'new' battery bought on here and it's the battery that's at fault. If it's getting hot after a few hours on an optimate working correctly then there is definitely something wrong with the battery. If it was old fashioned wet-cell battery I would have said low electrolyte levels could have been one possible reason.

  11. There was a recall to update the software, so that if left down, the dash issues a warning about it, so there must have been some issue?

  12. It really is just an engine cut off switch, no dash warnings, just a cut off switch plain and simple

  13. Well my 14 says "Switch not released" if I leave it down. Also there was plenty of chatter (when I had my 12) about battery drain if left down. So why not just put it up.

  14. I'm no electrician, so can't argue the point, but you are wrong about the dash warning. My '10 does it and apparently so does Mikeles '14?

  15. My 10 also does it. Software update made it so.

  16. My error, thought it was the DVT, I now realize it was previous models.

  17. Can't understand how they could let a simple kill switch actually activate something in it's OFF position when the whole bike is powered down.
