749s - Fuel Pump Not Priming

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by bluey, Aug 18, 2016.

  1. I have ordered a new fuel pump just in case and have already checked the pump assembly and all looks clean. It works when connected to.a battery.

  2. It has been known for the wiring in the fuel pump flange to break down where they go through the gland.

  3. Thanks. I'll connect it to a battery again and give the wires a good wiggle. :)

  4. The only electrical fault I can find is in the rear light/indicator circuit. If I wiggle the connector slightly the light goes out, might explain why I have lost a few bulbs!

I read on another forum one more person that linked these faults to the fuel pump fault

Can any of you electrical guys confirm this or not please?

Could this be one of those Ducati electrical quirks we read about?

    Bluey.

  5. I know a short circuit in the tail light took out my 999 loom right up to the fuse box, and that melted!

  6. Cool. So looks like I may have found my fault then (hopeful!).

I'll check the rear loom and the connectors and try again.

  7. Might be worth pulling the dash off and checking plug to that. Power to pump might go via it.

  8. I think you should get a wiring diagram. The fuel pump/relay power doesn't go anywhere near the dash, nor the tail light.

  9. Ok, so where should I be looking? The main loom is almost brand new and I cannot find any dodgy fuses or relays..

  10. Going back to the beginning what makes you think that the pump is not working?

  11. Intermittent no prime when the key is turned and sometimes cuts out whilst riding. When a restart is then attempted no priming from the pump.

  12. Its only happened when the bike is warm so far.

  13. I had similar issues with mine and it was an ignition coil! I think maybe the pump stops when it is at pressure, so it won't run all the time.

  14. Does it cut out on both cylinders or just one?

  15. Both. Absolutely nothing. The last time it happened if I rocked the bike back and fourth it would start but only for a 5 - 10 seconds. The coils were recently checked and I have a spare which confirmed coils are ok.

  16. Ok has to be pump then [emoji106]

  17. I plugged everything back in after a clean of the contacts and it has broken down again. There is a pattern forming now. The pump stops working as soon as the revs get high. After a while it will restart but same happens again.

    Ideas?

  18. Not enough pressure?

  19. Then on restart there is no noise from the pump.
