The pump runs all the time the engine is turning, whether it is firing or not. It runs for 2 or 3 secs at switch on then the ECU closes the relay again as soon as the engine is turning on the starter, as long as it gets a signal from the crank sensor it keeps the pump running and the coils and injectors powered. The pressure regulator prevents over pressure. It does indeed sound like the pump is at fault.
If you remove the air filter, you will have undo the headlight cluster, you can see the front injector firing. If it is not firing you don't have enough gas in the line
I have turned the key, I can hear the relay clicking and then again after a few seconds, so it sounds like power is being sent to the pump but no noise from the pump. I'll replace the pump then.
I had a similar issue with my 749 and it was an intermitant fault cause by the cable going through the potted gland in the base of the fuel pump. Sooooo. Found a fuel pump only that fits nicely on eBay, £60.00. It starts, and rides around the block a few times. Now I need to get it properly warm and give it a good caning as this is when it would usually break down.
I hadn't quite repaired the problem. The bike cut out again the other day but this time it would not restart at all so the intermittent fault was now a 'fault'. After some testing I found the plug in connector to the fuel pump assy to be faulty. At some point someone had pushed a terminal pin back inside the connector meaning it was only barely making a contact to the positive side of the pump. I retrieved the pin with a pair of long nosed pliers and have just come back from a 15 mile run without a problem. Fingers crossed.
Oh, and once I finish the mono conversion she is up for sale. Search my posts and you can see what has been done in the past. Genuine machine.
