1200 Real Wheel Bearing / Hub ?

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by RMRH, May 7, 2016.

  1. Hi,

I have movement in the rear wheel as if the bearings are on their way out.
The bike is a 2011 1200S and has 30k so a likely possibility...

However - having spoken to one main dealer they said it was highly unlikely as they've never replaced rear wheel bearings (..?)
They advised checking the rear wheel nut and the swing arm pivot - done and both are tightened to spec.

So... back to the rear wheel bearings
After a bit more research it seems the bearings are not a serviceable item but the whole rear hub would need to be replaced !

Any thoughts or experiences on this please ?

  2. Haven't got access to a parts catalogue at the moment to check but if the hub is similar to the 748/9*6 family, it most definitely is serviceable. If you google 996 rear hub service, there is a very comprehensive article on how to do it. Andy

  3. Thanks Android853sp but looks like the MTS hub is a sealed unit...

I just found the MTS tech manual and it says the following :

Overhauling the rear wheel Inspect the condition of the rear wheel.
As the wheel rim has no bearings, it should be supported using the service tool code 88713.2951.
Note: The rear hub is a component particularly critical to the dynamic safety of the motorcycle. under no circumstances may the internal components of the hub be serviced or repaired. The hub may be ordered as a complete assembly, spare part No. 756.2.013.1A.

  4. Ordered the rear hub from Ducati today, £460.... ouch :dizzy:

  5. My rear wheel felt like it was wobbling on Monday. Pulled over and the wheel nut was loose as Fk! Was worried my bearings had gone.

  6. Update... after putting a new rear wheel hub on the bike there was still some sideways movement on the rear wheel, movement I could feel going over raised white lines etc.
Turns out the rear hub axle probably also needs replacing.
And the cost of a rear hub axle is ?

    £540 !!!

That's £1000 in parts alone for rear wheel bearings... (hub+axle)

Anyone else here had to replace hub+axle after 35k ..?

(ps - rear wheel nut and swingers pivot have been thoroughly checked)

  7. i have had my axle replaced last 30 k service in feb. was rusty and difficult to budge. dealer said when replacing chain and sprocket. hub and bearing had a little rumble he said.... so am possibly looking forwards to that next like you.
