Tacho Drive - 900ss/sl

  1. Looking for the tacho drive (the part that locates into the head) - believe it is part# 066092160

The shaft with the cog on, not the other bit although maybe I will need both ?
Reason I need it is that I am swapping a 94 Monster engine into my SL. Monster engine just has a blanking plate where the tacho drive goes. Also my SL tacho had not been working as the knurled part of the cable that tightens it onto the drive had broken - that's a side-issue I suppose.
When I eventually persuaded the drive away from my SL engine I discovered the teeth were pretty mangled - a few metallic bits visible lying inside the cam area (not sure what you'd call that bit.) - not too clever.
Would really like to retain the original tacho and not replace with an electronic one - but the price of the genuine part (if available) is pretty steep.
    Anyone got one available ?

  2. If I were you, I would change the camshaft bearings either side of that worm gear........you should at least check them over because that swarf will get into them easily...........I suspect you found several bits laying right down at the bottom of the front of the head when you removed the lower rocker cover.

The new tacho drive parts from Ducati (from Moto Rapido) cost me about £45 in 2009, so God knows what they are now.

The job can be done without removing the engine, but you have to think about it as you go along.........it is relatively easy if you are careful and have a silly nut socket (make one), some threaded rod and large washers etc to pull the bearings in and out.

The fault usually occurs when the silly nut holding the pulley on the camshaft isn't tightened properly, so the worm gear can slip on the cam.........it is rare to find the woodruff key holding it in place, and particularly pointless if the worm gear doesn't have a groove for the key........

I suspect Ducati gave up on the key, because regardless of the key stopping the gear from rotating on the camshaft, if that nut isn't tight enough, the gear can move laterally, hence the mis-meshing of the pinion part.

  3. Thread moved

  4. I am starting to wonder if getting hold of the parts to make my tacho work is a sensible idea or not - The Stein Dinse website shows them priced just short of 200Euro and the whole thing sounds like it is prone to problems. I certainly wouldn't pay the full Ducati price for the parts - if I can find a cheaper decent one then I might see about it.

  5. What's the Ducati dealer price in comparison? I was pleased with Moto Rapido's prices for many items.

  6. All the prices I've seen have been over £100 and the Stein one is around 200Euro (I think maybe the 2 parts are included ?). I thought the Stein prices were a reflection of dealer prices as they sell genuine spares but I will contact a dealer or 2 just to see.

  7. Direct from Ducati it's £172. The parts are supplied as a pair under one part number.

  8. So from 2009 to 2016.......in five years, the price has jumped by, as near as dammit, 400%......!!

Where is the justification for that?

Now I think I'm glad I sold my Ducati two weeks ago.......

I think I will buy a Royal Enfield.
