I know this post shouldn't be here but didn't know where to put it. My son has a VW Golf MK V 1.4S and wants to buy some alloy wheels, with his Dads financial help. We've been looking at eBay and was wondering if we stick with standard 17 inch alloys from a Golf MKV GTD/GTI they will automatically be a straight swap and will the bolts from his standard, steel wheels be the correct length etc. What other models fit, Seen some nice ones from VW Transporter, Passat, Scirocco etc. I know there's a code 5x112 but sellers rarely can be bothered to check and guess only VW wheels would be stamped... Any advice would be welcome.
Don't know about all models (offset might vary?) but I had an Audi A3 3.2 Quattro which was fitted with 17" wheels and these would fit Golfs, TTs etc. of similar vintage (16" wheels wouldn't fit it though due to the larger front discs), I also had a VGC spare set of said wheels with tyres which, coincidentally I've just sold on ebay for a pittance...
I'd go for 18" , I have a mk6 Gti with 18" and they way better than the 17" just make sure they are the same 5x112
Car lowered or not? I have 19" on my lowered caddy,i drove it for 65000km now,no problemes at al. Henk!!!
A young lad might not want 19" wheels, at least he might not want to pay the price for the tyres? My S4 has 19" wheels and the tyres (like for like) are almost double the price of the 17"...
My MK5 GT Sport has 17's on it but there was an 18" option. I've driven a MK5 with 18's and it was shite, just too much road noise. I know the newer ones are much better set up for bigger wheels. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I've got Mazda RX8 18's on my Honda Accord Tourer and they went straight on with some new nuts and spigot rings. As long as the pcd is the same and the "poke" not radically different you'll be good to go. I'm running Avon tyres at £80 a corner
Not lowered.. We've been advised, on the 1.4 not to go any bigger than 17 inch. Shame you sold yours Dukedesmo, I like that style from the A3
When not lowered i would not go to big. Big wheels on a car that is not lowered looks strange. I would not go bigger then 16" when not lowered. I would try to find some original wheels like from a GTI or so secondhand. Then you will have some strong wheels so you don't have to worry about bending them when you hit a hole. Henk!!!
Shame indeed, I put them on with no reserve and got less than £80 for them. There was more than £80 of rubber left on the tyres...
