Sprocket Nuts

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by psalliss, Jun 25, 2015.

  1. Quick question. I know I'm being thick but can't work out how to remove the sprocket bolts from the bike. Cracked them loose but just spin around and don't come further up the thread. How do I get them off? Thanks

  2. Cut them off if the screws are spinning. Or hold the screw some how.
    What bike is it?

  3. It's a multistrada 1200. Tried to re tighten it but just spins other way as well. Doh

  4. Not sure of how the screws are retained but it sounds as if the female splines are sheared in the housing.

  5. Just guessing here, have they got an Allen key to the rear?

number 9 on diagram looks like the offending item
assume its a rubber damper with a stud in centre is the stud rotating or the whole item

  7. You need to hold the bolt in the sprocket carrier before undoing the nut - use a hex key.

  8. I felt behind before loosening but didn't feel like and Allen key hole. Sounds like there must be.

  9. The nuts hold the cush drives to the sprocket carrier. To change the sprocket you undo the big nut in the centre after removing the circlip and pull the carrier off complete with the sprocket. You should then tap the sprocket to knock it off the cush drives, leaving them in place. Refitting with a new sprocket is the reverse procedure.
It sounds like the cush drives are turning in the sprocket. Once you have the sprocket off you may be able to get a hold of them to re-tighten the nuts.

  10. Thanks for the info Derek, I had the same issues as OP and thought id stripped the bolts or summat!

Just needed an Allen key (12mm?) to stop em spinning whilst I removed and then tightened the nuts!

    Thanks again.
