I have a simple job to do: reinstall the gadget that triggers the outside light. I have 3 wires on it and can identify the three connectors they go in. Trouble is, I have no idea how the connectors open (and nor did the workmen who just cut the wires). Here are 3 photos of the connectors. Can someone tell me how they work? There is a hole at one end that looks as if it is made for a screwdriver (might not be...). I have tried stuffing one in, but despite levering in different planes, can't get the buggers to open. I could in theory snip the wire and replace with a connector that I might understand, but I have little wire available in the fitting and the ends I want to put in there are just twisted strands, so can't be forced into anything much. Can anyone give me advice? Thanks.
They look like push fit terminal blocks. ie you just push the wire in and its gripped by a bit of sprung terminal inside. You wont be able to open them, but your little screwdriver hole may allow the release of the captured wire ends with a little flexing.
I think the mole grip will demolish them nicely . good sideways grip and crush em. Make sure the lectricity is turned off tho. Red to Red , Black to Black , and Blue to fuck.
As above, sprung connector that *may*be either one shot, or re-use. But you seem to have tried to unspring it to no avail. with power off and using insulated tools (pref get a spark to do it), double check no volts there from any one point to another (including earth), As you never know who may have botched what circuits in to where, and the rise of renewables means you may have isolated the incomer, but are being fed from the solar or similar source. If no volts there then "disassemble" connector and replace with screw type, ensuring you mark what wires connect to what, and that all tails are neat when inserting in to new connector and no conductive parts protrude. Tighten to hand tight, have a brew, then go back and double check all neat and screws tight. re assemble the switch/ box, and bobs your dads brother. if in doubt, or not confident, then stop, tape all tails up and get a spark.
Thanks guys. Will get the old fashioned screw type and do it from there. At least I now know that what looks as if it should be renewable probably isn't.
Have a look at wago(think that`s spelt right) connectors they are a bit like what you have but can be re-used. brian.
