Spade terminal in connector block- replacement possible or not?

When I removed my Datatool alarm I had to cut the wire that had been fitted into one of the spade terminals and make a temporary connection using a 'choc-box connector . It seems that the red wire which you can see in my photo was once fitted in the large 8 way connector block, but it appears the alarm installer has removed the red wire and fitted a spade terminal into the block with the 2 small black wires you can see.

Is it possible to remove the spade terminal from the 8 way block and re-fit the original red wire, maybe using a pair of long nosed pliers .

Also, despite studying the wiring diagram carefully I can't work out what equipment is connected with this 8 way connector, any ideas?

  2. Look like the connector to the ignition key switch. Pretty sure you can get new connectors for those blocks. ebay maybe? Think they look very similar to normal spade connectors but have a tang on them to lock in the wiring block.

  3. I don't know the connector but a lot like that are like relay spade terminals that have a tongue on the spade and a ramp/wedge on the block. If you put a small flat blade between the connector and the flat piece of the spade (that allows the tongue on the spade to be lifted clear of the wedge on the connector) then pull back on the spade it will come free.

Sorry I can't help any more and remember I am just ASS-suming its the same as others I have came across

I'm on a roll here, 2 problems answered in as many minutes!

As Nelly mentioned, the connector block is on the l.h.s of my 749s, and is almost definitely the connector to the ignition switch ( hence why the wires had been fitted from the alarm unit into it)

I understand what you mention about the tongue, have come across similar before, locating the spade into the block, so see no reason why I shouldn't be able to tease it out and redo the wiring as I need.

Once again, amany thanks for help, much appreciated.

  5. Just checked a 999 i have on the bench. Yep, it's defo ignition switch. The terminal is removable. Depending upon how it was treated when it was mod'd, you should be able to reuse it. Maybe solder the connection to make sure it's good before clicking back in place

  6. Thanks Nelly, it makes sense it's the ignition switch, despite me thoroughly examining the wiring diagram, there is no comparison with the colours on the diagram matching the wire colour combinations I have.
Thanks for the confirmation, I'm a dab hand with the soldering iron, so the bike will need a trip into my lounge soon methinks.

  7. It all depends on whether they are pins (say, Molex type) or spades connectors in the block.....If they are pins, look down the business end of the connector when apart.

You should be able to see a couple of splayed tags projecting slightly from the pin which stop the pin from coming out....with a very small screwdriver of a paper clip gently push the tags into the pin....then it will pull out from the back of the connector....

Getting wires out to re-use the pin is a bit of an art particularly if it is a crimped type , but I have done it loads of times.

They are spade type connectors, I'm sure I will be able to 'persuade' the little devil out and reuse it.

    Thanks for your help.

  9. Not uncommon on the wirng colours. The swich gear and ignition switch are Jap and can vary. Loom side is usually consistant though so you can follow thru with that info.

  10. There will be a similar tag on the back of the spade...same procedure really...although the tag will probably be stronger than the Molex type.

  11. Thanks for that Nelly, I wondered why I couldn't work it out, I'm very familiar with wiring diagrams and couldn't understand why I couldn't see the particular colour combinations I had.
Anyways, now I know it's definitely the ignition switch it all adds to the slow learning process of understanding my bike; which while I'm on the subject , I can say has been utterly reliable in my 3 years of ownership, only a couple of lamps, and a front break light micro switch needing replacement.

  12. As has been said the tag is what is used to lock the metal part into the plastic connector, once removed you will need to splay the connector open (use a jewels screwdriver if you have one) then you can remove the connector and refit as needed, either by just crimping the cable again or add a small amount of solder to ensure a good connection... note we're talking a very small amount to ensure you can refit within the molex block.
