Charging battery through aux socket

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by JBJersey, Sep 26, 2012.

  1. Does anyone have any experience of connecting a charger (Optimate or equivalent) through one of the auxillary 12v sockets on the bike? The bike is a new 2012 Multistrada 'S' and has 2 power outlet sockets.
My thoughts are - if this were a car, i could connect a charger to the cigarette lighter socket and keep the battery maintained in that way.
If anyone can help, that would be great. Thank you!

  2. Are they not switched power via the ignition? If so you would have to have the ignition on whilst charging for it to work.

  3. Ah; good answer. Hadn't thought of that.
    Thanks - i will investigate.

  4. Yes, the AUX sockets are on a switched circiut, the same as the GPS power outlet. So charging the bike thru them will not work. But you can modify one of the outles by hardwireing it directly to the battery. Remember to put a fuse on the positiv one:upyeah:

  5. Most battery conditioners come with a wiring harness that connects direct to battery .

  6. What you need is a 12V connector that attaches to the battery at one end, and then provides the 12V end for the charger at the other end. The you just plug it together when you want to. (the charger to the bike I mean)

  7. your dealer should fit an Optimate cable gratis, mine did at 600 mile service.
