Hello, I've had this quote from Riders for a valve clearance check for my 996 Biposto. Sound reasonable or should I shop around? They offer free collection and delivery back to me which is a nice plus, but not essential. Thanks folks! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Thanks mate. Needed another opinion as I thought "what's the catch?" - this being a dealership etc. !! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The catch is that unless you do it yourself or use a well renouned, trusted place, you'll never have any idea if they've actually done what they say! As the quote is just a valve check, the likelihood is that they'll probably tell you that one or more valves have to be adjusted and you'll have to take them at their word and caugh up the extra. I would encourage anyone with common sense, the ability to read instructions and a reasonable selection of tools to have a go themselves, it's not that hard. Even if you chicken out of actually adjusting them, checking the clearances is relatively simple and painless. That way you'll have confidence that when they say all the valves need adjusting and you know it's only two, they're pulling a fast one!
Not to bad for a clearance check only but a proper check would involve cam removal as these need checking also. If the cams are removed then the belts will be removed also, so new belts should be fitted at cost only with no extra labour charge. Steve
That's a pretty damning statement of trust in Riders. Why would you assume they wouldn't do the work quoted for? I've never had this with my local dealer.
Not casting any doubt on their particular integrity per se, just been ripped off by enough so call professionals in all sort of occupations over the years not to trust most of them. Louigi Moto excepted!
Even if Riders are scrupulously honest, there is a catch here in that this is an open ended quote. You have no idea what you will end up paying if the clearances are out of spec. I think I would like to have some idea of what the cost might be if they need to make any corrections. It might also be useful to ask what the price of fitting supplied belts would be. You can get belts from suppliers on here that are every bit as good as oem but much less money.
