Is it possible to put a clutch back in that sticks out a couple mm further than it did before you took it out?
Not really unless something has changed. If it were me, I would disassemble and reassemble to check there was nothing wrong with the way it was assembled.
if it had a friction plate in first (will bed in to the basket further), and now has a steel plate it, then it could stick out a tiny bit further. was discussed on thread on here over the past few days, but can't seem to find it anywhere. Pete
The spring collars sit tight onto the inner hub pillars no mater how many clutch plates are fitted, the only way they could come in contact with the cover is as stated by 900streetfighter by leaving the cover gasket and spacers out or a loose inner hub locking nut allowing the whole inner hub to move out when the clutch is operated. On some clutches, slippers generally, the spring screw posts/pillars can screw in/out. ie they're replaceable. I have one such clutch in my 1198 48t and 1 post/pillar in particular enjoys unscrewing when I try to loosen the spring screw. So the whole thing comes off. I really should locsil green it.
