Death of a SuperSport

  1. Hi Jaques
How long have you had the bike ?

  2. Not much side-skirts on those pistons if at all? How is the gudgeon pin-small end fit now? Thinking if the piston was allowed to "rock" then it would jibble the circlip out in time?

  3. I'm just wondering if there was extreme slap on the piston skirt which might have caused the gudgeon pin to move around a lot....

Yes, I'm aware that slap isn't from side to side movement, which is why I mention extreme slap.......

....or tying up with 470four's thoughts, was the gudgeon pin really loose in the piston?......

I reckon it should be quite a tight fit.....I have usually had to freeze the pin and warm the piston to get an easy assembly.

Check the piston diameter and compare it with the bore diameter....both directions across both.......

Surely someone hasn't had the barrel bored a bit and oversized it for the rings and piston?

  4. It's just a failure, I'm going on it not being thoroughly warmed through before I booted it, I'm a fair weather rider and was trying to sneak in a final hack before hibernation, It's my fault, I broke it. I've had the bike 4 years, and done 22,000 hard miles on it bringing the total to 51,000 miles, I do all the work on the bike, plugs, oil, belts, filters every 3 months without fail (it's good having friends in the trade :-D) I'm only the second owner, the first being and old boy who spent literally thousands throughout it's life on maintenance, and, looking through past receipts and all the services it's not once the bores out since it left Ducati, so the fact that it's been 100% fault free for that many miles gives me confidence it'll carry on as I put another 50,000 miles on it.

  5. I think I've made a blunder here chaps. I bought what I thought was a 600 Monster/SS bottom cylinder bore and piston only to find they're slightly different, the piston is slightly different in shape, but only 5grams lighter so I figure it will be fine (some bore/piston dimensions) but the bore is different to a point where it's unusable.

I've included a picture to help describe the problem. The outer diameter of the bore cylinder is 96mm, not the 91mm and 92mm diameter respectively of the one I'm replacing. And, subsequently doesn't fit in my block! all the oil galleries are correct, have a got a slight older or newer model bore/piston?

  6. Looks to me you have a larger capacity cylinder and piston there...900...or even 1000cc

  7. I think the clue is in the '96mm' as opposed to '91' or '92'.......

  8. No way Al...Dya Think

  9. What is the bore diameter of the new cylinder? 92mm will be a 900 pot?

  10. 96mm as per picture...what's that from?

  11. The dimensions he gave aren't the bore diameter, they are the cylinder spigot diameter.....

    AL

  12. So they are Al.....so he most likely has 900cc Cylinder.

  13. Not familiar with the aircooled varieties but looking at the photo it appears that the thickness of the liner on its botttom edge is greater hence the 96mm dimension?

  14. Sorry guys, you're getting confused. The picture I posted shows the OUTER sleeve diameter, not the inner PISTON diameter. Both barrels have the same 80mm bore and 63mm stroke, but the sleeve diameters differ. I gave my buddy in Bologna a call and he's identified it as the barrel from a 1998 - 2001 Monster M600 Dark fuel injected engine. He confirmed what I already knew that it wouldn't fit in the block. So, I hope my mistake will help anyone in the future, if you need a new barrel, then they are year specific. 1994 - 1997 Monster/SS for carbs, 1998 - 2001 Monster M600 Dark for FI. And obviously, the 620 model is completely different all together.

  15. So my comment 'The dimensions he gave aren't the bore diameter, they are the cylinder spigot diameter.....' was correct, then....

  16. Don't take offence Arquebus, I'm trying to be clear and concise to those that are trying to help me with their suggestions, thank you for also commenting, I was expanding on your post.

  17. I'm not offended....just wanted to know if I had judged the issue correctly
