Iom Tt

Discussion in 'Touring' started by MadMark, May 10, 2017.

  1. TT's nearly upon us and I am going for the first time this year so am looking for any advice as to what to do, what to take etc

We are going on 31st may through to the 5th Jun, stopping in Ramsey

Have VIP tickets for Saturday race day but what do people do the rest of the time there?

  2. There's plenty to do, the IOM website lists all the events. Riding around seeing the island is great on its own. Take warm and dry clothes plus sun block !

  3. Between race days there are events all over the island, the sprint races at Ramsey are well worth a watch, go and have a look at the Laxey Wheel while your out and about.
    Steve

  4. drink beer in the Trafalar in Ramsey
    drink beer in other places
ride up to the point of Ayre so you take photos of the winkie
ride around (not just on the course)
eat kippers and ice-cream in Peel (not at the same time)
    ride the tram to Douglas
ride the horse tram in Douglas (if the horses are better)
The steam train south from Douglas
There's a sprint at Ramsey one day
go to the beach at Laxey
    Wander round the paddock
The Laxey Wheel, the Castle in Castletown, the other castle and ruined cathederal in Peel

as for what to pack - clothes for every possible permutation of British weather (and sunshine), mozzie repellent, a small battery-powered radio, your best drinking trousers

  5. All of the above

  6. Thanks. So I'll just take me drinking trousers then

  7. all hail the ale!!

  8. I'd take a couple of pairs!!!
My mate tends to finish up without any on.

  9. Ice cream at peel seafront. Best ever.

  10. Eat lobster at Filbeys Bistro, Peel

Eat breakfast at the Harbour Lights Cafe (smoked salmon and scrambled eggs)

Eat ice cream on the bank at Port st Mary

Afternoon tea at Sound Restaurant at Cregneash

Watch the racing from Braddan Church, best food, clean toilets, off circuit parking

  11. oooh! don't forget to eat Queenies too (big scallops basically)

  12. Christ, theres me thinking there was some racing on, looks like all i'm going to be doing doing is eating and drinking

  13. This is so you can listen to the race commentaries which are broadcast on Manx Radio on race days wherever you are, as well as announcements about delays, road closures, other events, etc. Believe me, a (cheap little) radio with an earphone is essential.

  14. Most of the museums a worth a visit and best part is they're free! (or a small donation)

The manx museum and murrays motorcycle museum I particularly enjoyed.

  15. Get up early - like 5:30 early
From Ramsey two brisk full laps, until the Police start to appear (Union Mills to Greeba they drive at 50 - it's like being on the pit lane speed limiter), plus speed cameras come out at Crosby, Ballig, end of Sulby straight. Speed limits in the villages are 30 of course, but there are increasingly long sections of 50 mph. Anywhere but the mountain expect oncoming traffic so use sight lines - but there are some superb bits to attack (Cronk Y Voddy, Barregarrow, Quarry Bends and Ginger Hall to Conkers my favourites).
Then still time for one more run over the mountain. At 7:15 the police will be at the Ramsey hairpin - don't speed through the cones up to them - it's a 30. They will have the radar gun.
Oh and don't waggle side to side to keep tyres warm; my son got pulled over for that. Long enough talking to, to cool the rubber !!
Final run over the mountain to the Creg.
There's traffic lights these days, will be on by now.
Hang a left for the back road to Ramsey.
    Breakfast.
Head out to watch the racing.

Do stuff on the other days.
    Repeat.

Morning is a tranquil time of day and people out riding generally know what they are doing - it's before the rush hour and the light is good. You might get a tow off a local and learn a section of course. Probably not worth doing if you've a stupidly loud exhaust mind.

Once you've done it once, you realise how clogged the roads are during the day and you are mixing it with locals trying to get to work, kids to school, people trying to circulate the whole course to their chosen spot with no time left. And increasingly on off days, the Mountain is shut for long sections because someone has crashed.

    Enjoy.........

  16. Hope the weather improves...
